Polyester chain futures weakened collectively at the midday close on July 2, with PTA's main contract falling 3.51% to 5,328 points, staple fiber's main contract dropping 2.16% to 6,796 yuan per ton, and bottle-grade chip futures declining 2.97%. Meanwhile, cotton and cotton yarn futures only edged down 0.09%, showing relative resilience among cotton textile varieties in the current market environment.

The direct driver of this round of decline comes from the upstream cost side. The deep correction in PTA indicates that PX and crude oil prices have recently loosened, breaking the cost support logic. For staple fiber, the spread between its price and PTA price is a key indicator of processing margins. On that day, the spread between staple fiber's closing price of 6,796 yuan/ton and PTA's 5,328 yuan/ton was only 1,468 yuan, already below the industry average processing cost line. This means that the cash flow profit of non-integrated staple fiber plants may have entered negative territory.

Cost Transmission and Industry Chain Pressure

From the perspective of the industry chain transmission path, PTA is the core raw material for staple fiber and bottle-grade chips. A single-day drop of over 3.5% in PTA is equivalent to releasing a cost-collapse signal to the midstream and downstream. As an intermediate product in the polyester chain, staple fiber's price elasticity is typically smaller than that of PTA, but the 2.16% decline on that day indicates that the market has quickly responded to changes in the cost side. The nearly 3% drop in bottle-grade chips further reflects that overall demand in the polyester downstream is not optimistic.

The downstream weaving sector is in the traditional off-season. Operating rates of texturizing and weaving enterprises in the Jiangsu and Zhejiang regions have shown a slight decline since late June, and terminal garment export orders have entered a gap period. On the inventory side, although the physical inventory of staple fiber plants is at a neutral level, the willingness of downstream yarn mills to restock is extremely low, with most purchases being just-in-time. This pattern of 'upstream falling, downstream waiting' accelerates the transmission of price declines.

The slight decline in cotton and cotton yarn futures contrasts sharply with the polyester chain. The cotton 2609 contract closed at 16,125 yuan/ton, and the cotton yarn 2609 contract closed at 22,635 yuan/ton, with both declines less than 0.1%. Behind this is the difference in fundamentals between cotton and the polyester chain: expectations of reduced new cotton planting area persist, and the national reserve cotton release policy has not yet been implemented, leaving the market without a clear short-selling catalyst. Cotton yarn prices are supported by cotton prices, while downstream home textile and garment export orders are relatively stable, with no large-scale order cancellations.

Market Expectations and Trading Logic

Market divergence is increasing regarding the outlook for staple fiber and PTA. Bears argue that if crude oil prices continue to weaken, PX costs will move further down, potentially pushing PTA below the 5,200-point mark, at which point staple fiber prices may follow and test the 6,600 yuan/ton level. Bulls, on the other hand, point out that current staple fiber prices are already close to the cash cost line of some plants. If prices continue to fall, it will trigger production cuts and maintenance, thereby providing bottom support for prices.

From open interest data, PTA's main contract increased in open interest on the decline, with obvious active short-selling; staple fiber showed a decline in open interest on the fall, suggesting that more longs chose to stop out rather than new shorts entering. This difference in open interest structure implies that the decline in staple fiber is more of a passive follow-through than a concentrated release of active short-selling power.

The trend of cotton textile varieties depends more on policy. The cotton market is currently in a narrow range-bound oscillation between 'upward hedging pressure and downward cost support'. Open interest in cotton yarn futures remains persistently low, and insufficient liquidity amplifies price fluctuations, but the directional trend is unclear.

Industry Impact and Response Strategies

The impact of this round of polyester chain futures decline on physical enterprises is mainly reflected in three aspects:

  • Processing margins for staple fiber plants are compressed, with non-integrated enterprises facing the risk of losses. Some small and medium-sized direct-spun staple fiber plants may be forced to reduce operating rates, which will alleviate supply-side pressure but also accelerate industry consolidation.
  • Downstream yarn mills and weaving enterprises will benefit from lower raw material costs, but only if they can effectively manage inventory risks during the price decline. If raw material prices continue to fall, yarn mills' high-cost inventories will face depreciation losses.
  • The spread between cotton textiles and chemical fibers may widen further, prompting some blended products to adjust their cotton ratio, increasing cotton usage and decreasing chemical fiber usage, thereby creating a substitution effect on staple fiber demand.

For Buyers - Staple fiber procurement can adopt a phased pricing strategy, avoiding large single-price locks before PTA stabilizes, and pay attention to support levels in the 6,600-6,700 yuan/ton range. - Cotton yarn procurement should focus on national reserve cotton release dynamics. If the release starts with a low base price, cotton yarn prices may fall further. It is recommended to postpone procurement until the policy is clear.

For Foreign Trade Enterprises - Export order quotes should shorten the validity period to 3-5 days and include raw material price fluctuation adjustment clauses in contracts to hedge against dual risks of exchange rate and raw material price fluctuations. - For export products using staple fiber as raw material, consider using the futures market for selling hedging to lock in processing margins. The current price level is suitable for establishing partial short positions.
