Public quotations on July 2, 2026, reveal a quiet divergence in the polyester staple fiber (PSF) market. For the same grade 1.56dtex*38mm melt-spun cotton-type product, the price from Zhonglei brand in Huzhou, Zhejiang, stood at 7,280 CNY/ton, while Huahong brand in Wuxi, Jiangsu, was only 6,870 CNY/ton—a spread of 410 CNY/ton. This far exceeds the typical 200 CNY/ton range for logistics and brand premiums, signaling that the market is marking real differences in regional and corporate competitiveness through price.

The Industrial Logic Behind the Spread

This 410 CNY spread is no accident. From an industrial cluster perspective, Huzhou, Suqian, and Wuxi belong to different PSF production bases. Huzhou, adjacent to downstream weaving hubs like Xiaoshan and Shaoxing, enjoys low logistics costs and strong customer stickiness, allowing companies to maintain higher ex-factory prices. In contrast, southern Jiangsu has a dense capacity concentration, especially Wuxi, a traditional chemical fiber base where new capacity has been released intensively in recent years. Oversupply pressure forces local companies to exchange volume for price, with Huahong's bottom-tier quotation epitomizing this situation.

From an enterprise perspective, the price gap also reflects disparities in cost control capabilities. Although the melt-spinning process benefits from economies of scale compared to chip spinning, companies vary significantly in energy costs, raw material procurement timing, and equipment depreciation management. The highest-quoted Zhonglei brand may have better PTA long-term contracts or lower energy consumption per ton of fiber, while the lowest-quoted Huahong may be compressing profit margins to clear inventory and preserve cash flow.

Transmission Effects on the Industry Chain

This widening spread means more options for downstream spinning mills but also increases procurement complexity. For mills in northern Jiangsu or southwestern Shandong, sourcing from Huahong could save about 6% on raw material costs, directly impacting order profitability in the competitive cotton-substitute market. But does a lower price mean compromised quality? Industry public data shows that under the premium-grade standard, physical property differences among brands are minimal. The real risk lies in supply stability and batch consistency—companies in low-price regions may face funding constraints leading to supply disruptions or quality fluctuations.

For upstream PTA and MEG suppliers, this divergence is a warning signal. When some PSF producers are forced to cut prices sharply, their profitability approaches breakeven, potentially leading to production cuts or shutdowns, thereby reducing raw material demand. With new PTA capacity still being released in 2026, if the price-cutting wave in the PSF segment transmits upstream, the profit distribution pattern of the entire polyester chain will face restructuring.

Window for Procurement and Inventory Strategy Adjustment

The current price structure offers arbitrage opportunities for buyers with strong financial resources. For large spinning mills with annual consumption exceeding 10,000 tons, shifting procurement focus from Huzhou to Wuxi could save millions of yuan annually from the price gap alone. However, logistics costs must be factored in—shipping from Wuxi to northern Jiangsu weaving clusters may cost 50-80 CNY/ton more than from Huzhou to Shaoxing, so the effective spread needs recalculation.

This quotation dynamic also reveals that the PSF industry has entered a deep adjustment phase. Industry capacity utilization fell below 75% in 2025, and new capacity continued to be added in the first half of 2026, with oversupply unlikely to change in the short term. In this context, brand premiums are being eroded by regional competition. The companies that survive and profit will either have extreme cost advantages or differentiated product development capabilities.

For Procurement Managers - Establish a multi-region price comparison mechanism: Track daily quotations from Huzhou, Wuxi, and Suqian's mainstream brands, and use price fluctuation windows to lock in low-cost supplies. - Evaluate total procurement cost: Beyond the quoted price, consider logistics costs, payment terms, and return policies to select the supplier with the lowest total cost. - Monitor supplier operational stability: Prioritize suppliers with high capacity utilization and ample cash flow to avoid supply disruptions due to production halts.

For Foreign Trade Enterprises - Leverage domestic price differences to optimize export costs: When quoting for overseas orders, use low-price regional products as the cost baseline to improve competitiveness. - Beware of quality pitfalls from low-priced goods: Export products require higher quality consistency; request third-party inspection reports for each batch. - Monitor the RMB exchange rate and PTA price linkage: Under the current price structure, every 100 CNY/ton drop in PTA reduces PSF costs by about 80 CNY/ton. Foreign trade enterprises can include raw material price adjustment clauses in long-term contracts.
