In the second quarter of 2026, the textile commodity market presented a stark contrast. Among 17 monitored products, only 6 saw price increases, while 11 declined, dragging the sector's average change to -5.15%. This data reflects the dual pressure of poor upstream cost transmission and weak terminal demand, as the industry chain undergoes a new round of profit redistribution.
Spandex and Viscose: Localized Cost-Demand Resonance
Spandex surged 12.66% quarter-on-quarter to 29,666.67 yuan/ton, up 21.09% year-on-year, driven by firm upstream MDI and PTMEG prices and resilient demand from sportswear and elastic fabrics. Viscose staple fiber rose 7.74% to 14,200 yuan/ton, with rayon yarn following at +3.02%, supported by tight dissolving pulp supply and seasonal orders. Cotton increased 4.56% to 17,567.83 yuan/ton, up 15.88% year-on-year, influenced by reduced planting area expectations and reserve cotton release, though mills remained cautious.
Nylon and Polyester: Overcapacity and Demand Collapse
Nylon products suffered heavy losses, with POY, FDY, and DTY falling 13.20%, 12.72%, and 12.49% respectively, and acrylonitrile down 12.89%. The collapse stems from capacity expansion in previous years outpacing demand growth from hosiery and outdoor apparel. Polyester products also declined broadly: DTY -11.89%, POY -11.41%, FDY -10.59%, staple fiber -10.52%, yarn -6.56%, and PTA -11.79%, driven by volatile crude oil prices and high polyester operating rates, leading to inventory buildup.
Industry Impact: From Price Signals to Decisions
The price divergence means different operating environments for textile firms. Spandex and viscose producers see improved margins but risk substitution. Nylon and polyester firms face urgent destocking, with potential cash flow crises for smaller players. In Shengze, polyester traders report over 20% order declines, while Keqiao sees more rayon inquiries but low conversion. Exporters face double pressure from overseas price cuts and domestic volatility, with some orders delayed or canceled.
