The spot price of PTA fell to 5,686.84 yuan per ton on July 3, 2026, down 1.57% from the previous day and 2.34% from the start of the month. This price has slipped below the annual median of 5,648.08 yuan, signaling a shift from a high range to a weak range. For the polyester chain, loosening cost support is reshaping the balance between upstream and downstream players.
Price Center Shifts Downward Under Inventory and Demand Pressure
Over the past year, PTA prices peaked at 6,932.90 yuan per ton and bottomed at 4,363.25 yuan. The current price is 1,246 yuan below the peak but only 1,323 yuan above the trough. Industry data show PTA has been declining from 5,823 yuan at the beginning of the year, with intermittent rebounds failing to sustain. This trend reflects two core contradictions: ample PX supply weakening cost transmission, and high polyester operating rates but insufficient downstream weaving orders, leading to inventory buildup and suppressed raw material procurement.
Notably, the price volatility has narrowed. The annual range was about 2,570 yuan, but the latest three-month range is under 800 yuan, indicating a lack of single-direction drivers. The tug-of-war between bulls and bears in the 5,600-5,800 yuan band leaves limited room for traders and forces mills to manage inventory cycles more carefully.
Industry Impact: Cost Transmission Blocked from Feedstock to Weaving
PTA weakness directly compresses polyester plant margins. According to industry estimates, the PTA-PX spread has narrowed to below 300 yuan per ton, approaching processing cost. Polyester plants, lacking bargaining power on the raw material side, can only maintain production-sales balance by lowering offers for polyester filament and staple fiber. Textile Circle research shows increased promotional discounts in major polyester filament hubs like Shengze and Changxing, with some specifications falling below 6,000 yuan per ton.
Downstream weaving mills face a dilemma: waiting for lower prices risks missing restocking opportunities, while buying now risks inventory devaluation. This wait-and-see sentiment is spreading to the fabric market. Grey fabric turnover in Nantong home textile cluster and Keqiao fabric market has slowed, with loom operating rates dropping about 5 percentage points from last month.
