The polyester staple fiber market has just completed a full price cycle. From July 2025 to July 2026, the benchmark price climbed from a low of 6,267 yuan/ton to a peak of 8,426 yuan/ton, before retreating to 7,280 yuan/ton. Behind this V-shaped reversal lies a three-way tug-of-war among raw material costs, capacity release schedules, and end-user orders.

The current price of 7,280 yuan/ton sits below the annual median of 7,346 yuan/ton and has accumulated a decline of 1.86% from the beginning of the month. This suggests the market is sliding from the high range toward the mid-to-low range. For chemical fiber traders and weaving enterprises, determining whether this trend will accelerate is more important than watching daily fluctuations.

What the Price Structure Signals

From the annual statistical data, the fluctuation range of polyester staple fiber spans 2,159 yuan/ton. The top-end difference of -1,145 yuan and bottom-end difference of +1,013 yuan indicate that the current price is closer to the historical low than the high. This is typically interpreted as a signal of a downward shift in the price center.

More noteworthy is the daily decline of -0.42%. Although the magnitude seems modest, combined with the monthly cumulative decline of 1.86%, it suggests the decline is accelerating. Looking back at the past year, similar consecutive declines often occurred during periods of concentrated capacity release or sudden demand drops. The textile industry is currently in its traditional off-season, with weaving machine operating rates in Jiangsu and Zhejiang already showing a slight decline, providing insufficient demand support.

What Is Happening on the Supply and Demand Sides

On the supply side, approximately 800,000 tons of new domestic polyester staple fiber capacity came online in the first half of 2026, mainly concentrated in Fujian and Jiangsu industrial clusters. These new production lines gradually reached full capacity in the second quarter, leading to a significant increase in market supply. Meanwhile, crude oil prices are oscillating in the $70-75/barrel range, providing weak cost support for PTA.

On the demand side, downstream yarn companies generally report shorter order cycles. The previously stable 45-day order cycle has been compressed to less than 30 days. End-use apparel brands are more cautious about inventory management, directly reducing weaving enterprises' willingness to stockpile. This trend of 'short orders, small orders, fast orders' has a direct impact on the procurement rhythm of polyester staple fiber—no longer requiring large-scale hoarding, but rather purchasing as needed.

Transmission Effects Across the Industry Chain

Chemical fiber plants are facing inventory pressure. Data shows that polyester staple fiber industry inventory days have risen from 15 days to over 20 days, approaching the warning line. Some factories have begun price-cutting promotional strategies, further exacerbating bearish price expectations.

Weaving enterprises are caught in a dilemma: if they purchase now, they risk inventory depreciation from further price declines; if they delay, they fear a price rebound when the peak season arrives. However, the current below-median price level actually provides a certain safety cushion for buyers.

Practical Recommendations

For Buyers - Shorten the regular procurement cycle from monthly to bi-weekly, using price decline windows to build positions in batches, reducing single-inventory risk. - Monitor the spread between PTA futures and polyester staple fiber spot prices; when the spread widens to over 800 yuan/ton, consider increasing purchase volumes. - Negotiate price guarantee agreements or floating pricing contracts with suppliers to lock in price ceilings for some orders.

For Foreign Trade Enterprises - Add raw material price linkage clauses in export quotations to avoid compression of export profits due to domestic price declines. - Monitor polyester staple fiber price trends in Southeast Asia; current domestic prices are already 3%-5% higher than those in Vietnam and India, weakening export competitiveness. - Use forward foreign exchange instruments to hedge exchange rate fluctuations while incorporating raw material price volatility into pricing models.
