The polyester staple fiber market is exhibiting a rare price dual-track phenomenon. On July 3, public industry quotes showed common fiber balls (30-50mm diameter) at 15,500 yuan/ton, while textile-grade cotton-type staple fiber (1.56dtex*38mm) ranged only from 6,940 to 7,320 yuan/ton. The spread exceeding 8,000 yuan/ton highlights the strong bargaining power of functional polyester staple fiber in water treatment versus the persistent weakness in textile downstream demand.
Industrial Logic Behind Price Divergence
Significant price spreads also exist within textile-grade polyester staple fiber. Zhejiang Tianchen Supply Chain quotes three brands: Zhonglei (Huzhou, Zhejiang) at 7,320 yuan/ton, Xintuo (Xuzhou, Jiangsu) at 7,200 yuan/ton, and Yida (Suqian, Jiangsu) at 7,150 yuan/ton, while Hebei Chujiao Supply Chain quotes Huahong (Wuxi, Jiangsu) at only 6,940 yuan/ton. The 380 yuan/ton gap between the highest and lowest reflects not just quality differences but also logistics costs, plant utilization rates, and brand premiums across production origins.
Notably, all quotes come from traders rather than producers. Zhejiang Tianchen quotes three brands simultaneously, while Hebei Chujiao quotes both Zhonglei and Huahong. This multi-brand agency strategy suggests ample inventory in the circulation chain, giving downstream buyers significant room for negotiation. However, the low price zone also implies some mills are operating near breakeven.
Cost Competition Across Regional Industrial Belts
Geographically, production origins from Huzhou (Zhonglei) to Xuzhou (Xintuo), Suqian (Yida), and Wuxi (Huahong) form a polyester staple fiber belt along the Grand Canal. Huzhou enjoys a logistics advantage due to proximity to downstream textile clusters (Shaoxing, Xiaoshan), commanding a premium of about 120 yuan/ton over Xuzhou products. The mere 50 yuan/ton difference between Xuzhou Xintuo and Suqian Yida indicates fierce intra-regional competition and converging cost structures.
Huahong's lowest quote (6,940 yuan/ton) may stem from its production scale or raw material procurement channels. For buyers, this price signal means: for basic cotton-type requirements, low-cost sources in southern Jiangsu are attractive; for stable quality and supply assurance, brands from Huzhou or Xuzhou still justify a premium.
Upstream-Downstream Transmission and Outlook
Polyester staple fiber's main raw materials are PTA (purified terephthalic acid) and MEG (monoethylene glycol). Current textile-grade prices are approaching the 7,000 yuan/ton threshold. If PTA prices rebound, staple fiber mills face margin compression or even losses. In contrast, fiber balls' high quote (15,500 yuan/ton) indicates resilient demand in niche applications like water treatment and environmental filtration, which can absorb higher costs.
For downstream textile enterprises, current low staple fiber prices present an opportunity, but two variables warrant caution: summer peak electricity demand may trigger production curbs, raising costs; and if autumn orders concentrate, a phased price rebound could occur. It is advisable for buyers to stock up moderately during the July-August off-season to lock in low prices.
