China Foreign Exchange Trade System data shows the onshore CNY closed at 6.7804 against USD on July 3, 2026, up 62 pips from the previous day and the highest closing level since February 10, 2023. The central parity rate was set at 6.8047, 41 pips stronger. This implies a cumulative appreciation of over 2% since the start of the year, meaning a forex loss of over RMB 20,000 for every $1 million export order.
Dual Squeeze: FX and Liquidity
The central bank conducted RMB 63 billion in 7-day reverse repos on the same day, keeping the rate at 1.40%, but net withdrew RMB 168.5 billion as RMB 231.5 billion in repos matured. For the week, the PBOC injected RMB 678.5 billion in 7-day repos and RMB 900 billion in overnight repos, but faced maturities of RMB 2.2665 trillion and RMB 900 billion respectively, resulting in a net withdrawal of RMB 1.587 trillion.
This 'volume-tight, rate-stable' approach signals tighter interbank liquidity. For textile exporters, a stronger yuan plus tighter liquidity means lower real purchasing power of export proceeds and potentially higher domestic financing costs.
Industrial Cluster Reactions
Export-oriented clusters like Keqiao (Shaoxing), Shengze (Jiangsu), and Nantong home textiles are most exposed. Orders are typically dollar-denominated with 30-90 day settlement cycles. In a strengthening yuan trend, profit erosion correlates with payment terms.
For a $1 million order booked at 6.85 and settled at 6.78, the direct loss is about RMB 70,000. For manufacturers with 3-5% margins, this can wipe out 15-30% of expected profit. Some SMEs are already asking clients to switch to yuan settlement or shorten payment terms.
Price Expectations and Sourcing Adjustments
On the import side, a stronger yuan lowers costs for imported polyester staple fiber, spandex, and dyestuffs, giving domestic chemical fiber producers a cost advantage but also intensifying price competition.
On the export side, yuan appreciation pushes up dollar-denominated prices of Chinese textiles. With competitors like Vietnam and Bangladesh enjoying weaker currencies, China's price competitiveness faces a temporary setback. Some buyers are asking suppliers to share forex costs or are seeking quotes from alternative origins.
