The onshore CNY closed at 6.7804 against the USD on July 3, up 62 basis points, with the midpoint hitting its highest since February 10, 2023. For textile exporters, this means every USD 1 in orders now yields about RMB 0.3 less than at the start of the year—a significant squeeze given the industry's average net profit margin of around 5%.
Dual Tightening: Currency and Liquidity
The PBOC conducted RMB 63 billion in 7-day reverse repos at a steady 1.40% rate, but with RMB 231.5 billion maturing, the net withdrawal was RMB 168.5 billion for the day. For the week, total operations reached RMB 1.5785 trillion, but maturities hit RMB 3.1655 trillion, resulting in a net withdrawal of RMB 1.587 trillion—the largest weekly drain in three months.
This dual tightening—CNY appreciation plus liquidity withdrawal—directly pressures textile exporters. Appreciation reduces the renminbi value of export revenues, while tighter liquidity raises short-term financing costs, increasing the burden of raw material procurement and inventory holding. Small and medium-sized textile firms reliant on export tax rebates and short-term loans feel this most acutely.
Industrial Belt Response: The Timing Game from Order to Settlement
Textile export orders typically have 30-60 day payment terms, leaving a forex risk window from order to settlement. The rapid CNY appreciation means orders quoted at 6.90 three months ago now settle near 6.78, costing roughly RMB 120,000 per USD 1 million order.
Exporters in Keqiao, Shengze, and Nantong are responding by shortening quotation validity from 15 days to 3-5 days, and increasing forward settlement ratios from 30% to over 50%. However, smaller firms without professional forex teams often have to passively absorb the fluctuations.
Practical Impact for Buyers and Exporters
Down the supply chain, when exporters' margins shrink, they may raise USD quotes or shorten payment cycles. Domestic buyers of imported fabrics and yarns could benefit from stronger CNY purchasing power, but should watch for changes in FOB and CIC terms.
For Buyers - Check suppliers' quotation validity clauses, preferring those accepting RMB quotes or offering hedging cooperation - Use the stronger CNY to increase stock of imported chemical fibers and high-end fabrics reliant on overseas raw materials - Include forex fluctuation sharing clauses in contracts, triggering renegotiation when rates move over 2%
For Exporters - Immediately assess forex exposure on existing orders, locking in forward contracts or options for unhedged positions - Adopt floating-rate quotations, specifying a benchmark rate and adjustment formula - Stagger settlement volumes to avoid lump-sum conversions, smoothing exchange rate impact
Whether the CNY stabilizes around 6.78 depends on the PBOC's midpoint guidance and USD trends. Textile firms must elevate forex management from an option to a necessity—otherwise profits will be silently eroded.
