On July 3, the public price range for polyester FDY 150D/96F semi-dull yarn stood between 8,300 and 8,650 CNY per ton, a spread of merely 350 CNY that has narrowed notably from last month. This bracket is not a simple array of numbers but a temporary equilibrium between overcapacity and cost support along the polyester chain.
Signals Behind Price Dispersion
For the same specification and grade, different Zhejiang-based producers quoted prices ranging from 8,300 to 8,650 CNY/ton. Rongsheng Petrochemical and Juxing Chemical both offered the lowest at 8,300 CNY, while Tongkun Group topped at 8,650 CNY, a 4.2% gap. Such dispersion is unusual in normal market conditions and typically indicates a lack of a unified pricing anchor.
Geographically, Shaoxing-based Juxing and Jiabao Fiber quoted 8,300 and 8,310 CNY respectively, at the low end. In Hangzhou, Rongsheng also offered 8,300 CNY, but Tongkun and Kaishi Group quoted 8,650 and 8,550 CNY. This intra-city divergence suggests that firms are adopting differentiated pricing strategies based on their own inventory levels, cash flow needs, and downstream order profiles.
Tug-of-War: Overcapacity vs. Cost Support
FDY 150D is one of the most widely used commodity specifications in the weaving market, primarily for garment linings, bag fabrics, and tent materials. Over the past two years, massive new polyester capacity has kept FDY supply loose or even oversupplied. Yet PTA and MEG prices remain elevated due to crude oil volatility and tight PX supply, providing a strong cost floor.
At 8,300 CNY/ton, prices are approaching the cash cost line for some older production lines, limiting further downside. But 8,650 CNY/ton lacks downstream buying support. Weaving mills are adopting a hand-to-mouth procurement strategy, unwilling to build large raw material inventories. This cautious sentiment suppresses trading activity, making high-end quotes largely nominal.
Practical Implications for Buyers
For fabric mills and traders, the narrowing FDY price range means reduced bargaining room. Low-price producers (8,300-8,310 CNY) likely face higher inventory pressure and are willing to move volume at lower margins. High-price producers (8,550-8,650 CNY) may have better inventory structures or stronger brand premiums. Buyers should evaluate not just the unit price but also payment terms, delivery schedules, and quality consistency.
