The polyester filament market has recently shown a critical signal: Rongsheng Petrochemical (including Shengyuan), a core industry supplier, reduced prices for certain polyester DTY and filament specifications by 100-200 yuan/ton in early July. Although not a full-scale cut, this move has prompted downstream buyers and traders to reassess the third-quarter outlook. Simultaneously, the Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange's polyester staple fiber futures fell, with short positions rising significantly, shifting the overall polyester sector sentiment from wait-and-see to bearish.

Price Details and Market Signals

According to public data, the price adjustments cover multiple mainstream specifications. For DTY: 75/36 low-elastic at 10,050 yuan/ton, 100/96 light-net at 9,900 yuan/ton, 120/192F micro-net at 9,550 yuan/ton, 150/48 low-elastic at 9,150 yuan/ton, 150/96 low-elastic at 9,100 yuan/ton, 300/96 low-elastic at 8,900 yuan/ton, 300/96 light-net at 8,900 yuan/ton, and 300/96 heavy-net at 9,250 yuan/ton. Most specifications saw reductions of 100-200 yuan/ton, moderate but directional.

PriceSeek rated polyester DTY at -1, polyester filament at -1, and polyester staple fiber at -0.5. The scoring system indicates a generally bearish impact on DTY and filament spot prices, with a minor negative effect on staple fiber through sentiment transmission. Notably, the staple fiber side faced additional pressure from futures: on July 2, the main 2609 contract fell 136 yuan/ton, with a significant increase in short positions, suggesting capital markets have already positioned for a downturn.

Root Cause: Supply-Demand Imbalance

As one of the largest capacity suppliers in the polyester industry, Rongsheng's price adjustments often serve as a bellwether. This partial reduction directly reflects two core issues: insufficient terminal orders and rising spot selling pressure. The transmission logic suggests that polyester filament sits in the mid-to-upper stream of the chemical fiber-weaving-garment chain, with price changes typically lagging behind final consumer demand.

Currently, downstream weaving mills are adopting a just-in-time purchasing strategy, with low willingness to stockpile. On one hand, overseas textile orders are becoming fragmented and smaller due to global economic slowdown; on the other, the recovery of domestic apparel consumption has fallen short of expectations, making it difficult for weaving mills to maintain high operating rates. This demand-side weakness eventually forces polyester plants to cut prices to clear inventory.

From an inventory cycle perspective, the industry has entered an active de-stocking phase. Polyester plant operating rates have not dropped significantly, but sales-to-production ratios continue to decline, leading to accumulated social inventories. Rongsheng's price cuts essentially aim to compete for limited downstream orders through pricing, potentially signaling an increased risk of industry-wide price wars.

Differentiated Impact on Three Product Categories

Polyester DTY, as the core adjusted variety, faces the most direct impact. DTY is primarily used in imitation cotton, imitation wool fabrics, and knitted garments. While price reductions will lower raw material costs for downstream weaving mills, they may also intensify buyer wait-and-see attitudes, as purchasers anticipate further price drops and delay orders.

Polyester filament (POY/FDY) is affected by sentiment transmission. Although Rongsheng only adjusted specific specifications, the market has interpreted this as a signal of broader price softening. If other polyester plants follow suit, the filament price center could shift downward by 200-300 yuan/ton.

The bearish impact on polyester staple fiber is more linked to futures market dynamics. Staple fiber futures and spot prices are highly correlated. The decline in the main contract and increased short positions indicate a bearish market outlook. However, staple fiber is mainly used in nonwovens and filling materials, with relatively rigid demand, so its decline may be smaller than that of filament.

Practical Recommendations

For Buyers - The market is in a downward price channel. Adopt a batch purchasing strategy to avoid large-scale stockpiling, prioritizing short-term production needs. - Monitor the production-to-sales ratios of Rongsheng and other leading polyester enterprises. If inventories continue to rise, there is room for further price reductions. - When signing long-term contracts, consider linking prices to public market quotes or including price protection clauses to mitigate downside risk.

For Exporters - Lower polyester filament prices help reduce raw material costs for exported fabrics, enhancing the price competitiveness of Chinese textiles in global markets. Exporters should seize this window to actively secure orders. - However, be cautious of overseas clients demanding simultaneous price cuts. Leave room in quotes for profit margins and monitor exchange rate fluctuations that could erode export profitability. - Consider using futures instruments (e.g., staple fiber futures) to hedge against raw material price volatility and lock in forward costs.
