On July 4, a notable price divergence emerged in China's chemical fiber market: Henan Kaijie Water Treatment Co., Ltd. quoted polyester staple fiber at 15,500 yuan/ton, while the benchmark price from Shengyishe on the same day was only 7,311.29 yuan/ton, a gap of 8,188.71 yuan, more than double the benchmark. This is not a statistical anomaly but a true reflection of the diverging pricing logics between specialty fibers and commodity chemical fibers.

The Underlying Logic of Price Divergence

Although both fall under the category of polyester staple fiber, water treatment grade and standard textile grade serve vastly different applications. Water treatment grade is primarily used in industrial filtration materials and wastewater purification, demanding higher strength, corrosion resistance, and filtration precision. The 30mm diameter specification quoted by Henan Kaijie is a customized industrial product, not a standardized textile raw material.

From a cost perspective, the production of specialty polyester staple fiber involves modification processes, specialized equipment, and stricter quality control, typically resulting in manufacturing costs 30%-50% higher than standard products. However, the 15,500 yuan/ton quotation represents a premium of over 110% over standard products, indicating a significant supply-demand imbalance in the water treatment grade market. On one hand, stricter environmental policies are driving sustained growth in industrial wastewater treatment demand; on the other hand, only a limited number of enterprises have the capacity to produce water treatment grade fiber at scale, resulting in inelastic supply.

In contrast, the standard polyester staple fiber market presents a different picture. Shengyishe data shows that on July 2, the benchmark price was 7,311.29 yuan/ton, up only 0.42% from 7,280.83 yuan/ton at the beginning of the month. Youcai Resources' semi-annual performance forecast showed net profit growth of 72.80% to 122.17%, but this was mainly driven by its differentiated recycled polyester staple fiber, not by price increases in standard products.

Industrial Belt Reactions and Upstream-Downstream Transmission

This price divergence significantly impacts regional industrial belts. Henan, as a central China textile industry cluster, reflects the region's breakthrough in specialty fibers through Kaijie's quotation. The high added value of water treatment grade polyester staple fiber provides a reference path for traditional chemical fiber enterprises seeking transformation and upgrading. In contrast, Jiangsu and Zhejiang clusters, focused on standard polyester staple fiber, face dual pressures of overcapacity and margin compression.

From a downstream transmission perspective, textile fabric buyers must be wary of cost misjudgment. If procurement lists involve industrial filter fabrics or specialty nonwovens, the raw material cost benchmark should reference specialty fiber quotations, not the general benchmark. Foreign trade companies, when taking orders involving filtration materials for water treatment equipment, should lock in specialty staple fiber procurement prices in advance, as the quotation validity period is only seven days, and price volatility risk is much higher than for standard products.

Practical Recommendations

For Buyers - Clearly distinguish procurement standards between water treatment grade and standard polyester staple fiber to avoid cost overruns or performance failures due to specification confusion. - For specialty fiber procurement, consider signing quarterly or semi-annual framework agreements to lock in price ranges and mitigate short-term volatility from the seven-day validity period. - Monitor capacity dynamics of specialty fiber suppliers like Henan Kaijie; if new capacity comes online, the premium may narrow.

For Foreign Trade Companies - When exporting water treatment equipment or filtration materials, use polyester staple fiber prices as a reference for quotation adjustments, especially the price gap between specialty and standard grades. - Use benchmark prices from platforms like Shengyishe as pricing anchors for standard products, but separately calculate cost markups for specialty fibers to avoid inaccurate export quotations. - Track performance trends of differentiated companies like Youcai Resources; their profit growth model can provide directional references for foreign trade firms' product upgrades.
