On July 3, Kaisi Group, a leading domestic chemical fiber producer, adjusted its polyester DTY (150D/48F, AA grade, semi-dull low-elastic white yarn) offer to 9300 yuan/ton, valid for seven days. This represents a slight dip from the previous day's industry benchmark of 9318.75 yuan/ton. Although the per-ton decline is less than 20 yuan, the signal is significant against the backdrop of high inventory and weak demand across the polyester chain.
Supply-Demand Logic Behind Price Softening
From a chain perspective, polyester DTY prices are influenced by three factors: upstream PTA and MEG costs, polyester plant operating rates, and downstream weaving mills' restocking appetite. Currently, polyester operating rates remain relatively high, but the terminal textile market has entered a traditional off-season, with weaving mill operating rates in Jiangsu and Zhejiang showing a sequential decline. As a leading player, Kaisi's price adjustment often serves as a bellwether. The 9300 yuan/ton offer breaks the previous week's stalemate in the 9318-9320 yuan range, suggesting that sellers' urgency to destock is rising.
Notably, the offer's validity is only seven days, much shorter than the typical 15-30 days. This 'short-cycle pricing' strategy usually indicates that suppliers lack long-term confidence in price trends and prefer to adjust quickly based on raw material fluctuations and order conditions. For buyers, this means a narrower price-locking window and a need to accelerate decision-making.
Regional and Category Transmission Effects
Major consumption areas for polyester DTY include textile clusters such as Shaoxing (Keqiao) in Zhejiang and Wujiang (Shengze) in Jiangsu. Water-jet looms and warp-knitting machines in these regions have huge demand for DTY. Kaisi, based in Xiaoshan, Zhejiang, sees its price changes directly transmitted to surrounding gray fabric markets. The 150D/48F specification is a medium-denier conventional variety widely used in fabrics like imitation memory, oxford, and linings. Once this specification's price loosens, it may trigger chain adjustments in similar and differentiated varieties.
Industry public data shows that the market benchmark for polyester DTY has gradually fallen from around 9500 yuan/ton to the 9300 yuan range over the past month, a cumulative decline of about 2%. Although the absolute decline is small, given that upstream PTA prices remained relatively firm during the same period, the weakening DTY price actually compresses polyester mills' processing margins. If downstream demand continues to languish, mills may resort to production cuts or maintenance to support prices.
