In early July, the polyester staple fiber market presented a warning signal: one company quoted 15,500 yuan per ton, while the industry benchmark was only around 7,311 yuan per ton—a gap of over 100%. This fractured pricing does not reflect an overall market rally but rather a misalignment between specialty products and commodity grades.
Category Divergence Behind the Price Gap
According to publicly available industry data, on July 2, the benchmark price for polyester staple fiber from Shengyishe stood at 7,311.29 yuan per ton. On the same day, Youcai Resources announced a projected net profit increase of 72.80% to 122.17% for the first half of the year, indicating overall industry profitability improvement. However, on July 4, Henan Kaijie Water Treatment listed its polyester staple fiber at 15,500 yuan per ton, with a validity period of only seven days.
The key difference lies in specifications: the batch has a diameter of 30 mm, which is a non-standard grade. In the chemical fiber industry, standard polyester staple fiber is typically 1.5D×38 mm or similar, used for mainstream applications like spinning and filling. Products with a 30 mm diameter are closer to monofilament or industrial yarn, with significantly higher production costs, equipment requirements, and energy consumption, thus operating under an independent pricing system.
This means the 15,500 yuan quote does not represent the general polyester staple fiber market but rather a niche case. The benchmark price of 7,311 yuan reflects supply-demand dynamics for commodity grades, and the two are not directly comparable.
Impact on the Supply Chain
For upstream chemical fiber mills, the high premium of non-standard products is tempting but limited by switching costs and order stability. Producing 30 mm diameter fiber requires adjustments to spinning components and drawing processes, potentially causing days of downtime. Downstream customers are also concentrated in niche sectors such as industrial filter media, specialty nonwovens, and water treatment materials.
For traders, this price disparity creates information asymmetry risks. If buyers misinterpret the 15,500 yuan quote as a market-wide increase, they may overpay for commodity-grade purchases. Conversely, if suppliers benchmark non-standard orders against the 7,311 yuan price, they risk losses.
Downstream users in the water treatment industry have relatively limited demand for polyester staple fiber but strict specification requirements. Henan Kaijie's quote likely targets its own production needs rather than general textile market supply.
Market Signal Analysis and Procurement Strategy
Historical data shows the benchmark price remained stable at 7,280.83 yuan per ton on July 2 and 7,311.29 yuan on July 4. Youcai Resources' profit forecast points to recovering downstream demand, but this has not yet translated into price increases.
The current market shows a split pattern: commodity grades are stable, while non-standard products see price hikes. For buyers, the key is to identify which track their needs fall into: conventional spinning-grade fiber hovers around 7,300 yuan, while specialty products require separate quotes and strict parameter comparison.
