The price gap between regular cotton-type polyester staple fiber and specialty fiber balls has widened to nearly 8,000 CNY per ton in early July. This figure reflects a stark structural divergence in textile demand.

Price Landscape: One Raw Material, Two Markets

Public pricing data on July 3 reveals a clear dual-track pattern. In the regular cotton-type segment, quotes from major producing regions in Jiangsu and Zhejiang ranged from 6,940 to 7,320 CNY per ton. Huahong offered the lowest at 6,940 CNY/ton, while Yida, Xintuo, and Zhonglei ranged between 7,150 and 7,320 CNY/ton. These are melt-blown, 1.56dtex*38mm first-grade products aimed at textile and apparel applications.

Meanwhile, fiber ball products held firm at 15,500 CNY/ton. Henan Kaijie offered three diameters—30mm, 40mm, and 50mm—all at the same high price. These are used primarily in industrial water treatment and air filtration, distinct from textile uses.

Demand Divergence: Weak Textiles vs. Resilient Industry

Pressure on regular polyester staple fiber prices stems directly from sluggish downstream textile and apparel orders. In the first half of 2026, domestic demand growth faltered, while export orders faced competition from Southeast Asian capacity. Cotton-type staple fiber, as a high-volume chemical fiber, often serves as a barometer for the broader textile sector. Current levels near 7,000 CNY/ton approach breakeven for some producers.

In contrast, fiber ball prices at 15,500 CNY/ton have held steady for an extended period. This price is driven not by textile demand but by tightening environmental regulations. Demand for fiber ball filter media in industrial wastewater treatment and circulating water purification grows steadily. The product has higher technical barriers, and supply is far more concentrated than for regular polyester staple fiber, resulting in very low price elasticity.

Regional Industrial Belt Reactions

Geographically, regular polyester staple fiber quotes cluster in Xuzhou, Suqian, and Wuxi in Jiangsu, and Huzhou in Zhejiang—traditional production hubs with concentrated capacity. The current price decline means these industrial belts face greater inventory pressure, with some small and medium mills potentially forced to cut production or schedule maintenance.

Fiber ball quotes originate from Zhengzhou, Henan. Henan has a deep industrial base in water treatment materials. Capacity here is relatively stable, with customer bases predominantly municipal engineering and industrial enterprises that place long-term orders with low price sensitivity. Consequently, price resilience is significantly stronger.

Implications for Buyers and Mills

For Buyers - Regular cotton-type polyester staple fiber is currently in a buyer's market with ample bargaining room. Consider phased purchasing to lower average cost, avoiding large one-time stockpiles. - For specialty products like fiber balls, given long-term price stability and consistent supply, consider signing quarterly or semi-annual framework agreements to lock in prices and hedge against future logistics or raw material volatility. - Monitor inter-brand spreads: Huahong at 6,940 CNY/ton versus Zhonglei at 7,320 CNY/ton represents a nearly 400 CNY gap. If quality meets specifications, prioritize lower-cost sources.

For Mills - Regular cotton-type lines face margin compression. Consider adjusting product mix to increase differentiated varieties such as functional staple fiber or recycled polyester staple fiber to boost added value. - Track upstream raw material prices for PTA and MEG. If upstream costs continue to weaken, reduce inventory turnover days to free up working capital. - Industrial specialty fibers (e.g., fiber balls) offer significantly higher gross margins than regular products. Mills with capacity should evaluate feasibility of conversion or new lines, while accounting for technical barriers and market entry timelines.

The current divergence in polyester staple fiber markets is not a short-term phenomenon but a long-term signal of industrial restructuring. Regular textile-grade fibers face twin pressures of overcapacity and weakening demand, while industrial specialty fibers benefit from environmental compliance-driven demand and maintain an independent pricing system. For industry participants, recognizing this trend is more critical than fixating on daily price fluctuations.
