A striking price signal emerged in the chemical fiber market in early July: water-treatment-grade polyester staple fiber (PSF) was quoted at 15,500 RMB/ton, while the benchmark for conventional textile-grade PSF stood at just 7,311 RMB/ton — a spread exceeding 100%. This is not a simple premium but a clear sign of accelerating industrial divergence.
Supply-Demand Logic Behind the Price Split
According to publicly available industry data, on July 4, Henan Kaijie Water Treatment Co. quoted its 30mm-diameter PSF at 15,500 RMB/ton, valid for seven days. On the same date, the benchmark PSF price monitored by Shengyishe was 7,311 RMB/ton, slightly down from earlier levels. The former is 2.12 times the latter.
This extreme spread is no coincidence. Water-treatment-grade PSF requires higher purity, specific fiber diameter, and specialized surface treatment — a niche within specialty fibers with limited capacity and high certification barriers. In contrast, conventional textile-grade PSF has suffered from massive new capacity additions in recent years, leading to a clear oversupply. The benchmark on July 2 was 7,280.83 RMB/ton, nearly flat with the July 4 level, indicating a low-level stalemate.
For buyers, this means abandoning the assumption that "polyester staple fiber" constitutes a unified market. The pricing mechanisms for different applications have completely decoupled.
Broken Transmission from Upstream Costs to Downstream
The persistent pressure on conventional PSF prices stems from the inability to pass through upstream PTA and MEG cost fluctuations. In the first half of 2026, the polyester chain as a whole was in a destocking cycle, with textile end-demand recovery falling short of expectations, squeezing PSF processing margins.
Water-treatment-grade products tell a different story. Driven by stricter environmental standards and growing industrial wastewater treatment demand, the filtration media market has maintained double-digit annual growth. Specialty PSF, as a core filtration material, gives pricing power to the few suppliers with specialized capacity. Henan Kaijie's quotation strategy reflects the tight supply-demand balance in this niche.
This rupture means that focusing solely on conventional prices for procurement decisions may miss the price volatility risks in specialty segments.
Divergent Responses Across Industrial Clusters and Companies
Regionally, conventional PSF producers in major producing areas like Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Fujian are facing declining operating rates. Some are pivoting toward differentiated products, including water-treatment, filling, and geotextile grades. Meanwhile, specialty-focused players like Henan Kaijie enjoy higher bargaining power and profit margins.
Youcai Resources' forecast of a 72.80% to 122.17% net profit increase for the first half of 2026 further confirms the effectiveness of a differentiation strategy. When the industry is mired in price wars, companies with specialty product capabilities are harvesting the rewards.
