The polyester filament yarn market is undergoing a new round of price pressure tests. In early July 2026, Rongsheng Petrochemical (including Shengyuan Petrochemical) implemented partial price cuts on its polyester DTY products, with reductions ranging from 100 to 200 yuan per ton across various specifications. For instance, 75/36 low-elastic yarn is now quoted at 10,050 yuan/ton, 150/48 low-elastic yarn at 9,150 yuan/ton, and 300/96 heavy network yarn at 9,250 yuan/ton. This marks one of the few concentrated price adjustments by the industry leader this year, signaling weakness on both the supply and demand sides.

Industry Background of Price Adjustments

As a core supplier of polyester filament yarn, Rongsheng's price changes have long been seen as a bellwether for the industry. This cut directly points to the core issue of insufficient terminal order support. According to the bullish-bearish scoring system, DTY scored -1, indicating increased pressure on spot sales and a bearish market sentiment. The overall polyester filament yarn score also stood at -1, reflecting the dilemma of weak downstream purchasing willingness across the sector.

Notably, this price cut is not an isolated event. During the same period, the main contract of polyester staple fiber (2609) on the Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange fell by 136 yuan/ton, with a significant increase in short positions. Although staple fiber and filament are different subcategories, the price sentiment transmission effect is evident. The staple fiber bullish-bearish score dropped to -0.5, indicating that the market is cautious about the entire polyester sector.

Transmission Chain of Supply-Demand Imbalance

The fundamental reason for this price cut lies in the disappointing recovery of demand. The operating rate of downstream textile enterprises remains low, and terminal orders for garments and home textiles have not shown obvious improvement. This has led to procurement of polyester filament yarn being mainly for immediate needs, lacking inventory-building motivation. Meanwhile, the supply increment from previous capacity expansion continues to be released, causing industry inventory to accumulate.

From an industry chain perspective, the weakening of polyester filament yarn prices will transmit pressure upstream to PX and PTA. If PTA prices cannot fall correspondingly, the profit margins of chemical fiber companies will be further compressed. For downstream weaving enterprises, the short-term decline in raw material costs can alleviate some pressure, but if terminal demand remains sluggish, the benefits of price cuts are unlikely to translate into actual profits.

Impact on Procurement and Foreign Trade

For fabric and garment buyers, current polyester filament yarn prices are in a downward channel, so large-scale stockpiling should be avoided. It is recommended to adopt a small-batch, high-frequency procurement strategy, locking in low points amid price fluctuations. At the same time, attention should be paid to subsequent price adjustments by leading companies like Rongsheng. If the scope of price cuts expands, it may trigger industry-wide follow-up reductions.

Foreign trade enterprises need to pay special attention to the linkage risk between exchange rates and raw material costs. The decline in polyester filament yarn prices may weaken the price competitiveness of some export products, especially for Southeast Asian markets. It is recommended to strengthen communication with overseas customers, flexibly adjust FOB quotation terms, and consider using futures tools to hedge against raw material price volatility.

Industry Outlook

Overall, the polyester filament yarn market is unlikely to escape the weak pattern in the short term. Genuine recovery in terminal demand may not occur until the end of the third quarter or early fourth quarter, when the release of autumn and winter orders could help stabilize and rebound prices. However, before that, the industry may face a round of capacity elimination, and the operational pressure on small and medium-sized chemical fiber enterprises will further increase.

For Buyers - Adopt a batch procurement strategy to avoid large orders during high inventory periods - Monitor price adjustment dynamics of leading companies and use price decline windows to lock in low-cost orders - Negotiate more flexible payment and delivery terms with suppliers to reduce capital occupation

For Foreign Trade Companies - Closely track the price spread between polyester filament and staple fiber, and adjust export product mix accordingly - Include raw material price fluctuation clauses in export contracts to share risks - Use futures markets for hedging to lock in long-term procurement costs
