PTA prices fell below the 5,700 yuan/ton threshold in early July, signaling a cost restructuring underway across the polyester supply chain. As of July 6, the benchmark price stood at 5,696.34 yuan/ton, down 2.18% from 5,823 yuan/ton at the beginning of the month. The annual median price is 5,648.08 yuan/ton, placing current levels slightly above the median. More notably, compared to the yearly high of 6,932.90 yuan/ton, the price has dropped over 17%, while the bottom support sits near 4,363 yuan/ton.

For polyester plants, this means raw material costs have shifted from elevated levels to a moderately low range. As the core feedstock for polyester filament and staple fiber, PTA price movements directly impact processing margins for polyester products. When PTA is expensive, downstream weaving mills tend to buy only for immediate needs and reduce inventories. Conversely, when prices fall, buyers may adopt a wait-and-see approach, anticipating further declines. This “buy on rising, not falling” psychology is particularly pronounced at current price levels.

Industry Impact: Cost Transmission and Inventory Dynamics

The persistent decline in PTA prices is rippling through the chemical fiber chain. Upstream, PX prices are under similar pressure, squeezing PTA producers’ processing spreads. Some high-cost PTA units may face production cuts or maintenance, which could provide supply-side support. Downstream, however, weaving and dyeing mills are largely buying hand-to-mouth, making it difficult for polyester plants to sustain high sales volumes.

  • Polyester mills’ raw material inventory cycles have shortened from the typical 7-10 days to under 5 days.
  • Weaving mill operating rates remain stable, but new orders are mostly small and short-term, making them highly sensitive to raw material prices.
  • Export activity is further slowing due to exchange rate volatility and uncertain overseas demand.

At the one-year median level, the market lacks strong bullish catalysts but also has limited downside risk. However, if downstream demand weakens further during the traditional off-season, PTA prices could test levels below the median.

Practical Recommendations

For Buyers - Build positions in batches at current moderately low levels to avoid inventory depreciation risk from a single large purchase. - Monitor PTA plant maintenance schedules; if concentrated turnarounds occur in late July, prices may see short-term support—consider increasing procurement. - Negotiate floating-price contracts with suppliers to partially transfer price volatility risk upstream.

For Exporters - Build a 3%-5% price fluctuation buffer into quotes to protect margins from raw material cost swings. - Monitor the correlation between RMB exchange rates and PTA prices; use forward settlement tools when necessary to lock in costs. - Offer “raw material price lock” options to overseas clients to enhance order competitiveness.
