On July 6, 2026, the benchmark price of viscose staple fiber 1.2D settled at 14,200 RMB per ton, unchanged from the beginning of the month. This figure, however, sits at the ceiling of a one-year price range: over the past 12 months, the lowest price was 12,800 RMB/ton, the average was 13,217 RMB/ton, and the current level represents a 7.4% premium to the average, or a 10.9% gain from the bottom.

A price plateau at the top of the cycle is often more telling than a one-sided rally. It signals a fragile equilibrium where sellers refuse to cut prices and buyers resist chasing highs. Behind this standoff lies a tug-of-war among raw material costs, capacity releases, and end-demand.

Cost and Supply: The Logic Behind the High Level

The primary raw material for viscose staple fiber is dissolving pulp, whose price trajectory directly sets the cost floor. Over the past year, global dissolving pulp markets have remained elevated due to tight wood chip supply and volatile energy costs. Import prices for dissolving pulp in China rose approximately 6% year-on-year, providing solid cost support for viscose staple fiber.

On the supply side, capacity utilization among major producers has held at around 85% over the past three months, with no large-scale maintenance or production cuts. However, the pace of new capacity additions has slowed noticeably—only about 120,000 tons of the planned 300,000 tons of new lines in 2025 actually came online in the first half of 2026. This disciplined supply behavior has objectively eased downward price pressure.

Notably, the current price of 14,200 RMB/ton is near a three-year high. Historical data show that when prices enter the 14,000-14,500 RMB/ton range, downstream yarn mills significantly reduce buying enthusiasm, shifting to a hand-to-mouth procurement strategy, which in turn caps further price increases.

Downstream Transmission: The Profit Squeeze in Rayon Yarn

Viscose staple fiber accounts for over 70% of the cost of producing rayon yarn. When upstream raw material prices sit at cyclical highs, downstream yarn mills face a delicate situation. The current market price for ring-spun 30s rayon yarn is about 17,800 RMB/ton, leaving a spread of only 3,600 RMB/ton over viscose staple fiber—a near two-year low in profit margin.

This means that if viscose prices rise further, yarn mills risk losses; if prices fall, margins could recover. Feedback from industrial clusters in Nantong and Gaoyang indicates that weaving mills have started to shorten procurement cycles, reducing routine inventory from 15 days to around 7 days. This destocking behavior is the most direct market response to high raw material costs.

The profit pressure in the yarn segment eventually transmits to fabric and apparel end markets. Export data for rayon garments from January to May 2026 shows year-on-year growth of only 2.3%, far below the 7.8% growth rate in the same period last year. Moderate end-demand growth is insufficient to sustain elevated raw material prices.

Price Outlook: Probability of Correction Is Rising

Statistically, after hitting an annual peak, there is about a 65% probability that viscose staple fiber prices will correct by more than 5% within the next three months. The current price of 14,200 RMB/ton already incorporates optimistic expectations for peak-season demand. If actual demand falls short, the magnitude of the correction could exceed most forecasts.

Another key variable is the import price of dissolving pulp. If capacity recovers in major supplying countries like Brazil and Indonesia in the second half of the year, every 100 RMB/ton decline in dissolving pulp would reduce the theoretical cost of viscose staple fiber by about 80 RMB/ton. Signs of softening in the dissolving pulp market are already emerging, which could become the first domino in a price adjustment.

For textile industry professionals, the current price level is neither a time to chase highs nor to panic-sell. Rational assessment of marginal changes in supply-demand fundamentals is more important than watching daily quotes.

Practical Recommendations

For Buyers - Shift procurement cycles from monthly to weekly, using price fluctuations to accumulate inventory in batches and avoid concentrated buying at the top. - Monitor two leading indicators: dissolving pulp import prices and industry operating rates. When operating rates fall below 80% for two consecutive weeks, consider increasing purchasing volumes. - Negotiate price linkage mechanisms with yarn customers to transfer part of the raw material price risk downstream, reducing unilateral exposure.

For Exporters - Include raw material price fluctuation clauses in export contracts, setting trigger conditions for price renegotiation, such as when viscose staple fiber prices move more than 5% in a single month. - Prioritize orders using differentiated fibers (e.g., modal, lyocell), which have more stable price movements and healthier margins. - Lock in forward exchange rates using RMB exchange rate windows to mitigate the combined impact of currency and raw material price volatility on profits.
