Nylon DTY prices have formed a wide oscillation but ultimately converging pattern over the past year. According to publicly available data from Shengyishe, the benchmark price of nylon DTY stood at 15,820 CNY/ton on July 6, 2026, in the mid-to-low range of the yearly band (13,560-18,960 CNY/ton). Compared to the beginning of the month, the price dropped by a negligible 0.13%. However, over a longer timeframe, this price is over 16% below the year's high of 18,960 CNY/ton and only 2,260 CNY above the low of 13,560 CNY/ton. This 'neither up nor down' horizontal movement is precisely the signal that the chemical fiber industry chain should watch most closely.
The Logic Behind the Mid-Range Price The yearly median price is 16,260 CNY/ton, and the current price of 15,820 CNY/ton sits slightly below it, indicating that the market has neither a strong upward catalyst nor panic selling. But a closer look at the yearly average of 15,046 CNY/ton—significantly below the current price—reveals that prices have spent more time in the lower range over the past 12 months. The concentrated release of new caprolactam capacity in the second half of 2025 once pushed nylon DTY prices down to the 13,560 CNY/ton low, followed by a slow recovery driven by demand to the current level. From the cost side, caprolactam prices stabilized in Q2 2026, but supply-side increments are still expected. Several domestic caprolactam units restarted after maintenance in June, and the market's expectation of loose supply in Q3 has already been priced into nylon chips and DTY. Without a clear cost support from upstream, the price elasticity of nylon DTY remains limited. From the demand side, the downstream weaving sector is in a traditional off-season. In key long-fiber weaving clusters—especially Changle in Fujian and Wujiang in Jiangsu, where nylon consumption is high—operating rates had dropped to around 60% by late June, lower than the same period last year. End-use apparel brands are placing short-cycle, rush orders, with little appetite for bulk stocking. This 'buy-as-needed' procurement model directly suppresses the spot liquidity of nylon DTY. ## The Game Between Inventory Cycles and Price Expectations The current 'mid-range' price actually reflects a delicate balance of inventory behavior across the chain. Upstream polymer plants have moderate nylon chip inventories, but the DTY texturing segment is seeing a slow accumulation of finished goods. Some texturing mills proactively reduced their operating rates in May-June to stabilize prices, but with limited effect. One noteworthy data point: the gap between the current price and the year's low (2,260 CNY/ton) is far smaller than the gap to the year's high (-3,140 CNY/ton). This suggests that the market has more fully priced in downside risk while remaining conservative about upside potential. Historically, when prices consolidate near the bottom for more than three months, a marginal improvement in demand can trigger a restocking rally. But this time is different: caprolactam still has new capacity to come online, so the cost floor is not solid. For buyers, the current price is in the mid-to-low range but not at a historical low. If downstream orders do not pick up noticeably in Q3, prices may continue to fluctuate narrowly within the 15,000-16,000 CNY/ton range. The real inflection point could come in Q4, when either an unexpected upstream production cut or the start of spring apparel stocking by brands could shift the price center upward. ## Practical Recommendations ### For Buyers - The current price is in the mid-to-low range but without a clear bottom signal. Adopt a demand-based procurement strategy and avoid bulk stockpiling during the sideways phase. - Monitor caprolactam plant maintenance schedules and operating rates. If a concentrated maintenance wave occurs in Q3, consider increasing safety stock by 2-3 weeks to lock in costs. - When signing quarterly framework agreements with texturing mills, opt for a 'floating price with floor clause' mechanism to cap price fluctuations within the 15,000-16,500 CNY/ton band. ### For Weaving Mills - Adjust product mix to reduce the share of commodity nylon DTY and increase the use of differentiated products like high-stretch yarn or antibacterial nylon to mitigate price pressure from homogeneous competition. - Use the current price stability period to optimize supplier structure, evaluating texturing mills' processing fees and delivery reliability in preparation for the peak season. - Establish an internal price alert system: trigger strategic replenishment when nylon DTY price falls below 15,000 CNY/ton, and suspend active restocking when it exceeds 16,500 CNY/ton.
