The chemical fiber industry is undergoing a quiet profit recovery.

Xinfengming's latest H1 2026 earnings forecast shows net profit attributable to shareholders is expected to be between RMB 1.38 billion and RMB 1.5 billion, a year-on-year increase of 94.59% to 111.51% compared to RMB 709 million in the same period last year. The growth in non-recurring net profit is even more pronounced, projected at RMB 1.45 billion to RMB 1.58 billion, a surge of 119.61% to 139.30%.

Profit Engine Shift: From Expansion to Supply Control

The most noteworthy aspect of this data is not the growth rate itself, but the fundamental change in the growth logic. In past years, profit growth for chemical fiber companies primarily relied on the scale effect from new capacity additions. However, Xinfengming explicitly attributes its profit surge to 'a disciplined slowdown in new industry supply and improved supply-demand balance.'

This means the profit driver is shifting from 'volume expansion' to 'price recovery.' When new capacity no longer floods the market chaotically, competition among existing capacity stabilizes, allowing companies to boost profits by widening product spreads and improving gross margins. For the entire PTA-polyester filament yarn chain, this represents a more sustainable profit model.

The Supply-Demand Balance Tilts

Xinfengming's forecast is not an isolated case. According to public industry data, the pace of new capacity additions for domestic PTA and polyester filament yarn has notably slowed since the second half of 2025, with some projects originally scheduled for 2025 being postponed to 2027 or later. Meanwhile, downstream weaving and apparel export demand remains resilient, particularly orders from Southeast Asian and South Asian markets returning, providing a stable absorption channel for chemical fiber products.

This shift in supply and demand is directly reflected in product spreads. Industry tracking shows that in H1 2026, the spread between polyester filament yarn and its raw material PTA widened by approximately RMB 300-500 per ton compared to the same period last year, with gross margins returning to near three-year highs. For integrated companies like Xinfengming, which own the entire 'PTA-polyester-polyester filament yarn' chain, the profit elasticity of the whole chain is further amplified.

Impact on Industrial Clusters and Procurement

The change in profit structure is cascading through the industry. In major chemical fiber production zones such as Tongxiang, Huzhou in Zhejiang and Shengze in Jiangsu, plant operating rates remain high, but companies are no longer blindly adding new capacity. Some small and medium-sized polyester plants are pivoting toward differentiated products like recycled polyester and functional fibers to avoid price competition in commodity grades.

For downstream weaving mills and fabric buyers, this means the cost floor for raw materials may rise in stages. The 'buy-as-you-go, low-inventory' strategy that worked in the past two years is now facing challenges. As raw material prices enter an upward channel and supply flexibility decreases, buyers need to reassess the proportion of fixed-price contracts and the length of inventory cycles.

Practical Recommendations

For Buyers - Pay attention to the Q3 raw material contract negotiation window; consider locking in some long-term contracts before spreads fully widen to avoid being forced to accept high spot prices during peak season. - Re-evaluate supplier structure: prioritize integrated companies with upstream PTA capability, as their cost control and supply stability are superior to standalone polyester plants. - For differentiated fiber varieties, consider increasing procurement budgets, as the room for price concessions on commodity grades is narrowing amid profit recovery.

For Exporters - Include raw material price flexibility clauses in export quotations to avoid losses from domestic chemical fiber price hikes. - For price-sensitive Southeast Asian buyers, recommend using 'price adjustment mechanisms' in contracts to link raw material cost fluctuations to final pricing. - Monitor export tax rebate policies for new materials like recycled polyester and bio-based fibers, as these categories may become a second growth curve for future profits.
