The particulate concentration from a steel plant chimney has stabilized below 3.5 mg per standard cubic meter—a figure approaching gas turbine emission standards. This achievement comes not from conventional dust removal equipment, but from a 3.5-meter non-membrane spunlace filter cartridge.
Technological Breakthrough
Recently, a project titled 'Key Technologies and Industrial Application of Energy-Saving, Carbon-Reducing, High-Temperature and Corrosion-Resistant Ultra-Long Spunlace Filter Cartridges' passed an appraisal organized by the China National Textile and Apparel Council (CNTAC). The overall technology was rated as internationally advanced. The project was led by Zhejiang Huaji Environmental Protection Co., Ltd., in collaboration with Northeastern University, MCC Southern Engineering Technology Co., Ltd., and Tayho New Materials Group Co., Ltd.
Traditional filter cartridges suffer from insufficient heat and corrosion resistance, easy detachment of membranes, and high operating resistance under high-temperature and high-humidity conditions. The project team solved these issues by developing precise gradient pore control and high-pressure wide-width forming technology for spunlace filter media, creating an ultra-wide, heat- and corrosion-resistant spunlace filter base material. They also innovated a microporous stiffener formulation and a high-permeability stiff forming process, successfully launching a 3.5-meter ultra-long, non-membrane, high-efficiency, low-resistance, energy-saving spunlace filter cartridge.
A notable innovation is the wire-frame internal support structure, which eliminates dust accumulation dead zones and significantly reduces equipment operating energy consumption. This means users not only get longer cartridge life but also continuous electricity savings.
Industrial Deployment
Two production bases have been established in Tiantai, Zhejiang, and Wuhan, Hubei. Together, they have an annual filter media production capacity of 36 million square meters. The Wuhan base is equipped with the world's first ultra-wide, ultra-high-pressure spunlace machine and is the only production base in China capable of mass-producing 3.6-meter non-spliced one-piece spunlace filter cartridges.
On the application side, products have been scaled in industries such as steel, power generation, and waste incineration. Engineering measurements show particulate emissions stably below 3.5 mg per standard cubic meter, far exceeding national ultra-low emission standards. Products have been exported to over 40 countries and regions.
The economic potential is significant: when fully operational, the project's annual output value is expected to exceed 1.5 billion yuan. This indicates that textile filter materials are upgrading from traditional 'consumable accessories' to 'high-value functional materials'.
Industry Implications
For the textile industry, this breakthrough sends at least three signals:
- Technical textiles are becoming a main battlefield for innovation. The spunlace cartridge breakthrough is essentially a deep intersection of nonwoven technology and materials science.
- The industry-academia-research collaboration model is proving effective. Northeastern University provides fundamental theory, MCC Southern brings engineering experience, Tayho contributes high-performance fiber raw materials, and Huaji Environmental completes industrialization—a typical multi-stakeholder joint effort.
- Export market potential is huge. Products already cover 40+ countries, showing that Chinese textile filter materials are competitive internationally.
