On July 7, 2026, China's PTA market sent a warning signal: the same grade and brand of PTA showed a price gap of 950 CNY/ton between East China and Central China. While East Jiangsu quoted around 5,850 CNY/ton, Wuhan in Hubei hit 6,800 CNY/ton. This is not a mere freight difference but a microcosm of regional supply-demand structural fragmentation.

Regional Divergence: Logistics and Inventory Squeeze

Public quote data shows the core driver is not raw material PX price fluctuation but regional PTA circulation efficiency. East China, a PTA production hub with major suppliers like Hengli and Yisheng Dachem, enjoys ample supply and mature port/warehouse infrastructure. In contrast, Central China (represented by Hubei) has scarce PTA capacity, and recent logistics controls and lower terminal efficiency have extended delivery times, depleting local inventories.

This price structure directly impacts downstream polyester mills' procurement decisions. Mills in East China can easily source PTA at 5,850 CNY/ton, while those in Central China must pay 6,800 CNY/ton, a cost difference of nearly 14%. This means Central China's polyester chips, filaments, and other products will be significantly less cost-competitive than their East China counterparts.

Supply Chain Transmission: Profit Shifting to Polyester?

The regional price divergence essentially signals a profit redistribution within the chain. Current industry-wide PTA operating rates hover around 78%, but East China's main production areas run at nearly 85%, while some Central China units operate below 70% due to maintenance or feedstock issues. This supply imbalance gives PTA producers stronger pricing power in Central China but more sales pressure in East China.

For downstream polyester mills, low East China PTA prices mean manageable short-term costs. However, if East China prices remain depressed, some PTA producers may cut output or switch products, potentially triggering nationwide supply contraction and raising the price floor. Conversely, Central China polyester mills face soaring costs; if they cannot pass these costs downstream (e.g., to polyester fabrics or garments), they may reduce operating rates, ultimately affecting order fulfillment.

Foreign Trade and End Markets: Concerns Emerge

As the upstream cornerstone of the polyester chain, PTA price fluctuations eventually impact textile and apparel foreign trade. East China's low prices help maintain the international price advantage of Chinese polyester textiles, but Central China's high prices may weaken export competitiveness for that region. Notably, this price gap emerged in early July, during the transition from traditional off-season to the 'Golden September-Silver October' stocking period. If the gap persists into August, it will disrupt downstream procurement rhythms: East China mills may stockpile early, while Central China mills wait for the spread to narrow.

From a macro perspective, the widening regional gap also exposes weaknesses in China's PTA logistics and warehousing system. Under extreme weather or emergencies (e.g., typhoons, port congestion), similar price fragmentation may recur frequently. Industry players need to establish more flexible regional allocation mechanisms or futures hedging strategies to mitigate such structural risks.

Practical Recommendations

For Procurement Managers - Monitor the East-Central China price spread closely. If it exceeds 800 CNY/ton for more than three trading days, consider signing forward-lock contracts in East China to secure low-cost feedstock. - For Central China buyers, prioritize monthly framework agreements with local PTA producers to avoid high spot prices. Also assess the feasibility of water or rail transport from East China to reduce logistics costs.

For Export Enterprises - Evaluate the impact of regional raw material cost differences on pricing. If orders are mainly sourced from East China mills, maintain current quotes; if involving Central China capacity, include raw material price adjustment clauses in contracts. - Use PTA futures to hedge price volatility. The current PTA futures main contract trades around 5,900 CNY/ton, roughly in line with East China spot but well below Central China spot. Based on order cycles, buy futures contracts in batches to lock in costs.
