The polyester staple fiber market is experiencing a tale of two extremes. On July 7, public quotes showed that fiber balls for water treatment (30-50mm diameter) remained firm at 15,500 CNY/ton, while cotton-type polyester staple fiber (1.56dtex*38mm) was only 7,000 CNY/ton, a spread of 8,500 CNY/ton. This is not a short-term fluctuation but a microcosm of structural demand divergence—rigid demand in environmental protection versus overcapacity in textiles is reshaping the pricing system of the entire polyester staple fiber sector.
Background: Direct Drivers of Price Divergence
From the detailed quotes, Henan Kaijie Water Treatment Co., Ltd. has maintained fiber ball prices at 15,500 CNY/ton for consecutive days, while cotton-type staple fiber from Huahong brand (Wuxi, Jiangsu) is only 7,000 CNY/ton. The former is a specialized water treatment filter media used in industrial wastewater purification and circulating water systems; the latter is a conventional raw material for spinning and nonwoven production.
This price gap stems from fundamentally different supply-demand dynamics. The water treatment fiber ball market is driven by stricter environmental policies, especially during the '14th Five-Year Plan' period, which tightened industrial wastewater discharge standards, boosting demand for filter media. In contrast, cotton-type staple fiber faces multiple pressures: a downturn in the textile industry, sluggish terminal apparel consumption, and concentrated capacity releases in the chemical fiber sector.
Industrial Impact: Differentiated Responses by Region and Enterprise
Transmission effects along the supply chain are already visible. In Wuxi, Jiangsu, producers of cotton-type staple fiber like Huahong are under severe profit pressure. At 7,000 CNY/ton, quotes are approaching the cash cost line for some plants. Even with the energy efficiency advantages of melt direct spinning processes, gross margin per ton is only about 200-300 CNY, leaving little room for error.
- Wuxi industrial cluster: Cotton-type staple fiber firms are forced to reduce operating rates, with some factories dropping below 70% to control inventory buildup.
- Zhengzhou industrial cluster: Companies like Henan Kaijie, producing water treatment fiber balls, enjoy volume and price increases. At 15,500 CNY/ton, gross margins exceed 30%, and capacity utilization is near full.
This divergence also appears at the raw material level. PTA and ethylene glycol prices for cotton-type staple fiber have been declining, further weakening cost support. In contrast, the main raw material for water treatment fiber balls—polyester chips—has relatively stable prices, and these firms have stronger bargaining power.
