The viscose staple fiber (VSF) price has stagnated at 14,200 yuan/ton for several days. According to industry data on July 8, 2026, the benchmark price of VSF 1.2D stood at 14,200 yuan/ton, flat from the start of the month but up about 7.6% from the average price of 13,200 yuan/ton a year earlier. This price level has reached the peak of the past 12 months, while the price at the same time last year was only 12,800 yuan/ton. The market is in a delicate stalemate, neither breaking out nor correcting.

Drivers of High Prices: Cost Support and Tight Supply

The main driver keeping VSF prices high is upstream costs. Dissolving pulp, the key raw material, has seen sustained international price increases over the past year. Meanwhile, domestic environmental protection policies have forced some small capacity out, keeping overall industry operating rates relatively low. Looking at the annual price range, the low of 12,800 yuan/ton occurred in July 2025, and the high of 14,200 yuan/ton is the current price, indicating that VSF prices have been in an upward channel over the past 12 months. The median of 13,500 yuan/ton suggests that the current price is significantly above the year's price center.

Notably, despite the high price, the daily increase is zero. This indicates a lack of upward momentum—downstream buyers are becoming less willing to accept high raw material costs. For textile mills, VSF is a core raw material for producing rayon yarn, vortex spun yarn, and blended fabrics, accounting for 60%-70% of total raw material costs. If VSF prices remain above 14,000 yuan/ton for an extended period, downstream yarn mills will face severe profit compression.

Industry Impact: Imbalanced Profit Distribution

From an industrial chain perspective, the current high VSF price has not been smoothly transmitted to the end market. The downstream rayon yarn market has recently shown weakness, with fabric and gray cloth orders dominated by short-term and small-lot orders, lacking sustained large-scale procurement. This forces yarn mills to adopt a just-in-time purchasing strategy, reducing raw material inventory cycles. Industry data shows that the average VSF price over the past 12 months was 13,223 yuan/ton, while the current price of 14,200 yuan/ton is nearly 1,000 yuan/ton above the average. Whether this premium can be sustained depends on whether downstream demand can materially recover before the traditional peak season.

For VSF producers, the current high price brings substantial profit margins. However, for the entire textile chain, excessive profit concentration in the raw material segment is unhealthy. If end demand remains weak and yarn mills reduce or halt production, the risk of a VSF price correction will quickly accumulate. Historical experience shows that when the divergence between raw material prices and downstream acceptance exceeds 10%, a price correction often occurs within one to two months.

Practical Recommendations

For Buyers - Avoid large stockpiling at current levels; adopt a batch-by-batch, small-lot purchasing strategy, keeping inventory cycles to 15-20 days to mitigate mark-to-market losses. - Monitor dissolving pulp price changes and industry operating rates. If operating rates rise above 80% for two consecutive weeks, the likelihood of price softening increases significantly. - Negotiate short-term floating price agreements with suppliers, locking in a base volume while pricing the remainder on a market-linked basis to balance cost and supply stability.

For Foreign Trade Companies - For VSF export business, use CIF quotations to avoid profit erosion from combined fluctuations in shipping costs, exchange rates, and raw material prices. - Pay attention to demand changes for VSF in Southeast Asia; capacity expansion in India and Vietnam may open new export opportunities. - When signing long-term contracts with overseas clients, include raw material price adjustment clauses, stipulating that contract prices can be adjusted when VSF price volatility exceeds 5%.
