Acrylonitrile prices have softened. On July 8, Sinopec East China Sales lowered its listing price by 250 yuan/ton to 9,450 yuan/ton, uniformly implemented at its Zhenhai Refining and Anqing Petrochemical plants. This is a clear adjustment in petrochemical pricing for acrylonitrile, with signaling significance outweighing the numerical change.

Supply-Demand Dynamics Behind the Price Cut

From public price data, the new listing price of 9,450 yuan/ton represents a decline of about 2.6% from previous levels. Although the single cut is modest, Sinopec's listing price adjustments are often seen as a market bellwether. The immediate trigger may be easing upstream raw material costs or weakening downstream demand. Industry data shows that propylene prices have recently fluctuated within a narrow range, providing limited support for acrylonitrile. Meanwhile, operating rates in downstream sectors like acrylic fiber and ABS resin have not seen significant improvement, with buyers mostly maintaining just-in-time replenishment and showing little willingness to stockpile.

These subtle supply-demand shifts are also evident at the industrial cluster level. East China is a major production and consumption region for acrylonitrile and its downstream products, including acrylic fiber and ABS. Capacity adjustments at Zhenhai Refining and Anqing Petrochemical directly impact textile chemical fiber clusters in Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Anhui provinces. Following the price cut announcement, some traders suspended quotations and adopted a wait-and-see approach, reducing spot market activity.

Downstream Transmission: Cost Logic for Acrylic Fiber and ABS

Acrylonitrile is the primary raw material for acrylic fiber (often called artificial wool), accounting for about 60%-70% of its production cost. A 250 yuan/ton reduction in listing price theoretically lowers acrylic fiber production costs by 150-175 yuan/ton. However, actual transmission is not linear. Acrylic fiber producers typically purchase raw materials under monthly contracts, so the spot listing price adjustment has a limited impact on current contract settlements, but it lowers the psychological anchor for next month's negotiations. This means cost benefits may not be realized until August at the earliest.

For the ABS resin industry, acrylonitrile is also critical. ABS prices have already been under pressure, and this raw material price cut will reinforce expectations of lower product prices. End customers in sectors like home appliances and automotive may further push down procurement prices, squeezing profit margins for modified plastics companies.

Procurement Pace and Inventory Strategy Adjustments

For downstream textile chemical fiber buyers, Sinopec's price cut could trigger a chain reaction. Whether other suppliers, such as Jilin Petrochemical or Shanghai SECCO, follow suit will be a key variable in the next price trend. If they do, the acrylonitrile price center may shift to the 9,300-9,400 yuan/ton range, opening a procurement window.

In terms of inventory strategy, companies with high inventories face impairment risks, while those with low inventories can moderately slow replenishment and wait for clearer bottom signals. Small and medium-sized acrylic spinning mills in industrial clusters, in particular, need to be wary of cash flow pressures from raw material price fluctuations, as they often have weaker contract bargaining power and rely more on spot markets.

Practical Recommendations

For Buyers - Postpone large purchases and observe whether Sinopec and other major suppliers further adjust prices in the next round. The price bottom is expected to become clearer within the next 2-4 weeks. - Renegotiate monthly contract base prices with acrylic fiber and ABS suppliers, aiming to incorporate the July listing price reduction into the August settlement formula. - Use forward contracts or futures tools to lock in some low-cost supply, hedging against spot market volatility.

For Foreign Trade Companies - Monitor the lagged impact of falling acrylonitrile prices on export quotations for acrylic fiber and apparel fabrics. Export order prices may have room for a 1%-2% reduction by August-September. - Include raw material price fluctuation clauses in export contracts to avoid buyer demands for renegotiation due to domestic raw material price drops. - Prioritize cooperation with acrylic fiber suppliers that have their own raw material production capacity, as they have stronger cost control and offer more stable pricing.
