Price movements at the feedstock end often leave their first mark on list prices. On July 8, Sinopec's North China chemical sales subsidiary cut its industrial acrylonitrile list price by 250 yuan per ton, setting the new price at 9,450 yuan per ton. Although the adjustment is modest, the signal it sends deserves careful attention from the chemical fiber and downstream supply chain.

Industrial Logic Behind the Price Cut

This price adjustment is not an isolated event. The acrylonitrile market's bullish-bearish score has recently slipped to -1, indicating a clear dominance of selling pressure. Sinopec North China's list price cut directly exerts bearish pressure on the spot market and is expected to drag down circulating cargo quotes. From a supply chain perspective, this move reflects a temporary loosening in the fundamental supply-demand balance.

Key downstream sectors for acrylonitrile include acrylic fiber, ABS resin, nitrile rubber, and acrylamide. For acrylic fiber, a major synthetic fiber, raw material costs account for 60%-70% of total production costs. A 250 yuan/ton reduction in the list price translates to a cost saving of approximately 150-175 yuan/ton for acrylic fiber producers, provided the spot market effectively transmits this decline.

Transmission Effects on the Chemical Fiber Chain

For the textile industry, the most direct beneficiaries of falling acrylonitrile prices are producers of acrylic yarn and fabrics. Lower raw material costs will ease profit margin pressure, especially against the backdrop of uneven recovery in end-user apparel consumption. Any loosening on the cost side helps improve corporate cash flow.

However, transmission is not instantaneous. The extent and timing of spot market follow-through depend on trader inventory levels, downstream purchasing willingness, and regional supply-demand dynamics. As North China is a major consumption hub for acrylonitrile, the procurement pace of nearby chemical fiber plants will directly influence the price floor. If demand remains weak, further list price cuts cannot be ruled out.

For the ABS resin chain, acrylonitrile is one of three key monomers. Its price decline helps lower plastic product production costs, but ABS pricing is more influenced by styrene and butadiene movements, limiting the standalone impact of acrylonitrile.

Practical Recommendations

For Buyers - Monitor Sinopec's subsequent list price adjustments. If spot market declines exceed expectations, consider increasing procurement volumes to lock in lower raw material costs. - Negotiate short-term floating price contracts with suppliers to optimize cost structures during the current downward price window. - Track acrylonitrile port inventory changes in North and East China; accumulating inventories would reinforce the downward price trend.

For Exporters - Adjust export quotes for acrylic fiber and ABS products based on raw material cost reductions to enhance price competitiveness in international markets. - Monitor exchange rate fluctuations and overseas demand changes to avoid blindly compressing profit margins due to lower raw material costs. - Use futures or forward contracts to hedge against potential raw material price rebounds; the current low price level offers a window for establishing hedging positions.
