Nylon DTY (Drawn Textured Yarn) prices have exhibited a textbook 'mid-range oscillation' pattern over the past year, which is no coincidence. According to China Customs and publicly available industry data, from July 8, 2025, to July 8, 2026, the benchmark price of nylon DTY fluctuated between 13,560 yuan/ton and 18,960 yuan/ton, with an amplitude of 28.5%. The current quote of 15,820 yuan/ton sits near the median value of 16,260 yuan/ton, neither triggering an alarm nor showing a trend breakout.

The Industrial Game Behind Price Stagnation

The essence of this sideways movement is a balance of power between upstream caprolactam capacity expansion and downstream fabric demand weakness. On the supply side, new caprolactam production lines in China have been continuously released in recent years, weakening raw material cost support. On the demand side, nylon DTY is mainly used in outdoor sportswear fabrics, down jacket linings, and high-end underwear. Since the second half of 2025, order growth in these end markets has clearly slowed, especially for garments exported to Europe and the US, which have been affected by inventory cycles.

Notably, although the annual average price of 15,051.26 yuan/ton is lower than the current price, the current price is still 2,260 yuan/ton above the historical low, a premium of about 16.7%. This means that for buyers, the current level is not an absolute price trough. The 'bottom-fishing' signal circulating within the industry is not valid. A more reasonable judgment is that the market is in a transitional phase of supply-demand rebalancing.

Upstream-Downstream Transmission and Procurement Windows

The price rigidity of nylon DTY is weakening. In the past, nylon yarn prices were highly correlated with crude oil prices, but data from the past year shows this correlation has diminished. The reason is that China's caprolactam self-sufficiency rate has increased from 65% in 2020 to over 90% in 2025, significantly reducing import dependence and weakening the transmission effect of overseas price fluctuations.

From the perspective of profit distribution along the chain, current margins are concentrated in the polymerization segment, while processing fees for spinning and texturing have been squeezed near breakeven levels. This means that if downstream demand remains weak, nylon DTY prices could further decline to the 14,500 yuan/ton level. Conversely, if autumn/winter fabric orders are released intensively in August-September, prices could rebound to around 17,000 yuan/ton.

For foreign trade enterprises, exchange rate fluctuations are another variable that must be factored in. In the first half of 2026, the RMB exchange rate against the US dollar fluctuated by more than 3%, directly affecting the export quotations of nylon DTY denominated in US dollars. Some Southeast Asian buyers have begun to shift to local sourcing, which puts potential pressure on China's nylon DTY exports.

Practical Recommendations

For Buyers - The current price is in the mid-range. It is recommended to adopt a 'batch purchasing, dynamic price locking' strategy, avoiding large one-time purchases. Lock 40%-50% of annual procurement volume through long-term contracts, and flexibly replenish the remainder based on market signals. - Pay close attention to order initiation in mid-August to early September. If weaving mill operating rates rise above 75% by then, consider increasing spot purchasing; if rates remain below 65%, continue to wait for lower prices. - Use futures or forward contracts to hedge price volatility risk. Although no standard futures product exists yet for the nylon chain in China, processing margins can be locked by signing basis contracts with upstream polymer plants.

For Foreign Trade Enterprises - When quoting to Southeast Asian and South Asian clients, adopt a 'RMB pricing plus exchange rate floating clause' approach to share currency risk. Additionally, offer 3-6 month forward quotations to enhance customer loyalty. - Monitor nylon capacity expansion plans in India and Vietnam. These countries are building new polymerization and spinning capacity, which is expected to materially impact China's export market share in 2027-2028. Strategically develop differentiated products such as antibacterial and flame-retardant functional nylon DTY. - Leverage RCEP rules of origin to relocate some texturing processes to ASEAN member states, thereby enjoying tariff benefits and circumventing trade barriers.
