The localization of specialty fiber supply chains is moving from laboratory to scale. China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology recently published a list of selected units for key fine chemical innovation tasks, covering upstream monomers and supporting materials for PBO fiber, PIPD fiber, and high-strength carbon fiber. This marks a decisive step in breaking foreign monopolies on critical inputs.
Monomer Breakthroughs: From DAR to TAP
PBO fiber, known for being 10 times stronger than steel, relies on the monomer DAR, previously dominated by Japan's Toyobo. Zhejiang Dinglong Technology, along with AstaTech (Chengdu) and Sichuan University, will tackle DAR synthesis. Dinglong also takes on the TAP monomer for PIPD fiber, a next-generation flame-retardant material. These breakthroughs free downstream fiber producers from import dependency and could cut costs significantly.
Fiber Production: Chenguang and Puyang Lyu Yu
On the fiber side, China Bluestar Chenguang Chemical will develop PIPD fiber, accelerating its engineering validation. Puyang Lyu Yu New Materials enters the melamine fiber project, which is inherently flame-retardant and non-dripping, ideal for protective gear. The inclusion of these firms shows a focus on full-chain industrialization from monomer to fiber.
Carbon Fiber: Oil and Sizing Agent Advances
For carbon fiber, Zhejiang Baowan Carbon Fiber, Lianyungang Shenying Composites, and Yulin Haishen New Materials will tackle high-strength carbon fiber precursor oil agents. Meanwhile, Jiangsu Advanced Functional Fiber Innovation Center and Weihai Tuozhan Fiber will develop carbon fiber sizing agents, which are critical for fiber-matrix adhesion. These efforts address often-overlooked yet vital auxiliary materials.
Equipment Localization: Polymerization Reactors
Yangtze River Delta Physics Research Center will work on high-performance polymerization reactors, previously imported from Germany and Japan. Localization could reduce equipment costs by over 30% and shorten expansion timelines, completing the puzzle for scaled specialty fiber production.
Regional Impacts
Selected firms are concentrated in Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Shandong, Shaanxi, and Sichuan, near established textile and chemical clusters. This means breakthroughs will directly benefit local industrial belts, upgrading supporting SMEs. For buyers, within 2-3 years, domestic PBO and PIPD fibers will offer stable supply and competitive pricing, especially in aerospace, ballistic materials, and firefighting gear.
