The PTA spot market is witnessing a rare pricing divergence. On July 8, public quotes for the same premium-grade PTA ranged from a low of 5,960 yuan per ton to a high of 6,800 yuan per ton, a spread of 840 yuan or over 12%. For downstream polyester plants purchasing by the ton, this means raw material costs can vary by nearly 1,000 yuan per ton, sharply squeezing profit margins.
Regional Logic Behind Price Divergence
The price gap is no accident. In the latest data, Yisheng Dahua brand was quoted at 6,800 yuan per ton in Hubei Province, while Hengli Dalian brand was at 5,960 yuan per ton in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, a difference of 840 yuan. The same brand, Yangzi Petrochemical, was also quoted at 6,800 yuan per ton in Nantong, contrasting sharply with Hengli Dalian. This reveals two key features: first, brand premium differences—Yisheng Dahua and Yangzi Petrochemical maintain high prices in specific regions, while Hengli Dalian actively lowers prices; second, regional spreads widen—logistics costs, inventory pressures, and downstream demand structures differ between Hubei and Jiangsu, leading to price divergence for identical products.
From an industrial belt perspective, Jiangsu Province, as a concentrated polyester production area, has dense downstream weaving enterprises in cities like Nantong and Suzhou, making PTA supply relatively abundant. Suppliers there must cut prices to compete for orders. In contrast, Hubei Province has limited PTA circulation, relying on external shipments, and logistics costs naturally push prices higher. This regional price gap is unlikely to narrow in the short term and may widen further due to summer peak electricity demand and plant maintenance.
Upstream-Downstream Transmission and Procurement Strategy Adjustments
PTA price fluctuations directly impact polyester filament and fabric sectors. The current spread exceeding 800 yuan per ton means polyester plants’ raw material procurement costs can vary by 6%-10%. For large polyester enterprises consuming thousands of tons of PTA monthly, the cost difference can reach millions of yuan. This forces downstream players to refine procurement: some adopt price-locking strategies, signing long-term contracts with low-cost suppliers; others exploit regional spreads by cross-province sourcing to reduce costs.
Notably, Hengli Dalian’s low-price strategy may aim to grab market share, squeezing small-to-medium PTA producers. Yisheng Dahua and Yangzi Petrochemical, maintaining high prices, likely rely on low plant utilization or minimal inventory pressure. This brand-level price game is essentially a battle for downstream customer loyalty. For textile fabric enterprises, the period of stable PTA prices is over, and procurement decisions over the next 3-6 months will directly impact product gross margins.
