When the localization of high-end specialty fibers shifts from 'point breakthroughs' to 'full-chain synergy,' a key signal is emerging: China's textile industry is no longer content with catching up at the application end but is launching an all-out assault on upstream raw materials and core equipment.
From Monomers to Equipment: A Full-Chain R&D List
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) recently published a list of key fine chemical innovation projects, organized into three categories: intermediate raw materials, key materials, and critical equipment. The number of textile-related projects and their wide coverage are rare in recent industry-specific initiatives.
In the high-performance fiber monomer sector, Zhejiang Dinglong Technology, along with AstaTech (Chengdu) Biopharmaceutical and Sichuan University, has taken on the R&D task for the key monomer DAR of PBO fiber. PBO, known as the 'super fiber of the 21st century,' has long seen its monomer synthesis controlled by companies like Toyobo of Japan. Dinglong also secured the TAP monomer project for PIPD fiber, positioning itself as a potential 'hidden champion' in specialty fiber monomers.
On the fiber material front, China Bluestar Chemical Engineering is responsible for PIPD fiber development, while Puyang Green New Material has been selected for the melamine fiber project. PIPD fiber (also known as M5) combines high strength, high modulus, and excellent flame retardance, making it ideal for aerospace and ballistic applications. Melamine fiber directly addresses the gap in domestic high-performance flame-retardant fiber industrialization.
In the carbon fiber and composite materials segment, the list is particularly concentrated. Zhejiang Baowan Carbon Fiber, Lianyungang Shenying Composite Materials, and Yulin Hengeheng New Materials have been selected for the development of high-strength, high-modulus carbon fiber precursor oil agents. The National Advanced Functional Fiber Innovation Center, together with Weihai Tuozhan Fiber, will jointly develop carbon fiber composite sizing agents. Sizing agents act as the 'glue' between carbon fiber and resin matrix, directly affecting composite interface performance, and have long relied on imports.
For critical equipment, the Yangtze River Delta Physics Research Center has been selected for the development of high-performance polymerization reactors for fibers. This means the 'last mile' for domestic specialty fibers is not just about formulations but also equipment bottlenecks like reactor pressure resistance, temperature uniformity, and scalability.
Industry Impact: Why This List Matters
In recent years, China's carbon fiber production capacity has expanded rapidly, but high-end grades still suffer from 'capacity without performance.' The deeper logic of this R&D list is that MIIT, leveraging the national industry-finance cooperation platform, is linking investment support with a gradient cultivation system for quality enterprises, guiding resources toward the toughest challenges.
For downstream buyers, the most immediate impact will be improved supply chain security. Once categories like PBO monomers, PIPD fibers, and carbon fiber sizing agents are localized, import substitution will no longer be theoretical. For example, PBO fiber prices have exceeded tens of thousands of yuan per kilogram, with delivery cycles constrained by overseas suppliers. Domestic breakthroughs could reduce prices by 30%-50% and significantly shorten lead times.
For fiber producers, these R&D tasks mean that technical standards and customer validation barriers will be systematically lowered. In the case of carbon fiber sizing agents, the joint effort by Weihai Tuozhan and the Innovation Center is essentially establishing a unified interface solution for the entire carbon fiber supply chain. Once mature, downstream composite manufacturers will no longer need to repeatedly adjust processes for different sizing agents, boosting production efficiency.
The localization of key equipment is equally critical. High-performance polymerization reactors have long been imported from Germany and Japan, with unit prices often reaching tens of millions of yuan and slow after-sales response. The inclusion of the Yangtze River Delta Physics Research Center signals that domestic reactors are becoming competitive in corrosion resistance, temperature control precision, and scale-up capabilities.
