A long-standing bottleneck in the filter media industry—the corrosion resistance and membrane peeling of filter cartridges under high-temperature conditions—is being systematically dismantled by a domestic technology. The 'Energy-saving, Carbon-reducing, High-temperature and Corrosion-resistant Ultra-long Spunlace Filter Cartridge Key Technology' project, recently assessed by the China National Textile and Apparel Council, was led by Zhejiang Huaji Environmental Protection Technology Co., Ltd., in collaboration with Northeastern University, MCC South Engineering Technology Co., Ltd., and Tayho Advanced Materials Group. The assessment committee concluded that the overall technology has reached an internationally advanced level.
Technical Path: A Full-Chain Restructuring from Substrate to Structure
Traditional filter cartridges in high-temperature, high-corrosion scenarios such as steel and waste incineration face three persistent shortcomings: insufficient temperature and corrosion resistance, physical peeling of the membrane layer leading to a sharp drop in filtration accuracy, and high operating resistance that increases energy consumption. The project team's solution was not a partial patch but a restart from the fiber substrate.
One core breakthrough is the precise control of gradient pore size in spunlace filter media and high-pressure, wide-width forming technology. By adjusting the spunlace process parameters, a pore size gradient from coarse to fine is formed from the air inlet side to the outlet side, ensuring both dust-holding capacity and filtration precision. Building on this, the team developed a microporous stiffener formulation and a high-permeability stiff forming process, enabling the filter media to achieve high-efficiency, low-resistance filtration through its own structure without relying on a membrane. This bypasses the long-standing issue of membrane peeling.
Another key innovation is the redesign of the support structure. The project pioneered a high-reliability wire-frame internal support structure, replacing traditional cages, eliminating dead zones for cleaning, and establishing an automated manufacturing system. This change directly reduces equipment operating energy consumption, meaning lower lifecycle operational costs for purchasers.
Capacity Layout: What 36 Million m² Annual Capacity Means
The project has established two major production bases in Tiantai, Zhejiang, and Wuhan, Hubei, with a combined annual filter media capacity of 36 million square meters. The Wuhan base is noteworthy: it is equipped with the world's first ultra-wide, ultra-high-pressure spunlace equipment and is the only production base in China capable of mass-producing 3.6-meter seamless, one-piece spunlace filter cartridges.
The technical detail of 'seamless, one-piece' is significant for downstream users. In traditional processes, wide filter cartridges often require multiple pieces to be spliced together, creating weak points that compromise sealing and increase failure risk. A 3.6-meter one-piece design can cover larger cross-section dust removal equipment, reduce installation joints, and improve overall system reliability.
From an industrial cluster perspective, Tiantai, Zhejiang, is a traditional hub for filter media processing, while Wuhan serves central China's steel and power customer base. This dual-base layout leverages Tiantai's supply chain advantages and Wuhan's proximity to the heavy industry market, reducing logistics costs and response times.
Market Validation: The Logic Behind Sub-3.5 mg/m³ Emissions
Technical indicators must ultimately be validated in real operating conditions. The project's products have been deployed at scale in the steel, power, and waste incineration industries. Engineering test data show that particulate matter (PM) emissions are consistently below 3.5 mg/Nm³. This value is significantly lower than the current national standard for special emission limits (10 mg/m³) and also outperforms the EU Industrial Emissions Directive's Best Available Techniques (BAT-AELs), which for most sectors range from 5-10 mg/m³.
For the steel and power industries, ultra-low emission retrofits have entered a deep-water phase. Early, crude end-of-pipe treatments (e.g., simply adding baghouse filters) are being replaced by refined filter media selection. An emission level of 3.5 mg/m³ means companies can potentially skip subsequent wet electrostatic precipitators or plume abatement steps and directly meet standards. This provides a tangible boost to the return on investment for retrofit projects.
When fully operational, the project's annual output value is expected to exceed 1.5 billion yuan. Based on the 36 million m² capacity, the average price per square meter is about 42 yuan, placing it in the mid-to-high end of the industrial filter media range. Given that products are already exported to over 40 countries and regions, its pricing power and technology premium space are relatively stable.
