China's specialty fiber industry is undergoing a comprehensive supply chain breakthrough from raw materials to equipment. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's latest list of fine chemical key product innovation tasks includes PBO fiber, PIPD fiber, melamine fiber, and carbon fiber supporting materials as national priorities, with Zhejiang Dinglong Technology, Weihai Expand Fiber, and Zhonglan Chenguang among the core participants.
For the textile industry, this is more than a list of technical challenges—it signals a systematic dismantling of long-standing bottlenecks in high-end fiber upstream that have historically relied on imports.
Monomer Breakthroughs: Unlocking PBO and PIPD
PBO and PIPD are considered the 'king of fibers' due to their superior tensile strength, modulus, and heat resistance, far exceeding conventional aramid and carbon fibers. However, domestic production has been constrained by the synthesis of key monomers DAR (for PBO) and TAP (for PIPD).
Zhejiang Dinglong Technology has been selected for both monomer tasks, collaborating with Aist (Chengdu) Biopharmaceutical and Sichuan University. This means China is now targeting the chemical synthesis end of the supply chain. Once mass production succeeds, it will significantly reduce costs and change the country's position in high value-added fields like ballistic materials and aerospace structures.
For buyers, this implies that within 3-5 years, domestic PBO and PIPD fibers may move from lab samples to small-batch supply, with prices potentially 30% lower than imports and improved supply chain stability.
Carbon Fiber Support: The Hidden Barriers of Oil and Sizing Agents
While carbon fiber localization has accelerated, the oil agents for precursor fibers and sizing agents for composites have been overlooked. These additives directly affect processing performance and interfacial bonding with resin matrices.
Zhejiang Baowan, Lianyungang Shenying Composites, and Yulin Hengshen are tackling high-modulus carbon fiber precursor oil agents; the National Advanced Functional Fiber Innovation Center and Weihai Expand Fiber are jointly developing composite sizing agents. This indicates policy is shifting from 'can we produce fiber' to 'can we produce fiber that works well,' addressing the 'cook without rice' gap.
For downstream users, domestic oil and sizing agents will directly lower composite manufacturing costs, especially in wind blades, pressure vessels, and aerospace.
Equipment Localization: The Polymerization Reactor
The Yangtze River Physics Research Center has been selected for high-performance fiber polymerization reactor development. These reactors, critical for molecular weight distribution, have long been monopolized by Japanese and German companies.
This move extends government support from products to equipment, offering domestic fiber producers shorter procurement cycles, lower investment thresholds, and reduced import dependency.
Industry Impact and Practical Advice
The list covers the entire specialty fiber chain—monomers, fibers, auxiliaries, and equipment—reflecting a coordinated strategy. For textile professionals, this brings both opportunities (cost reduction, supply security) and challenges (higher technical thresholds).
