On July 8, 2026, polyester staple fiber (PSF) market presented a stark price contrast: water treatment fiber balls (standard grade) were quoted at 15,500 CNY/ton, while textile-grade 1.56dtex×38mm cotton-type PSF ranged between 7,140 and 7,450 CNY/ton. The spread of over 8,000 CNY/ton between these two subcategories under the same PSF umbrella is exceptionally rare.
This price gap reflects fundamentally different demand logics. Water treatment fiber balls, used primarily in industrial wastewater filtration and oilfield reinjection, are rigid consumables driven by tightening environmental regulations and rising industrial water treatment investment. Their demand is less sensitive to economic cycles, providing fundamental support for high prices. In contrast, textile-grade PSF, as a raw material for apparel and home textiles, directly bears the brunt of weak end-consumption.
Regional Price Differences and Industrial Belt Reactions
Looking at specific quotes, textile-grade PSF shows a clear geographical price gradient: Zhonglei brand from Huzhou, Zhejiang at 7,450 CNY/ton, Xintuo brand from Xuzhou, Jiangsu at 7,330 CNY/ton, and Huahong brand from Wuxi, Jiangsu at 7,140 CNY/ton. The 310 CNY/ton spread reflects variations in production costs, inventory pressure, and sales strategies across regions.
Zhejiang Tianchen Textile Supply Chain Co., Ltd. quoted both Zhonglei and Xintuo brands, indicating that traders are leveraging regional price differences for allocation. Hebei Chujiao Supply Chain Management Co., Ltd. offered the lowest price for Huahong brand, possibly due to proximity to northern consumer markets and lower logistics costs. Overall, the price center for PSF in Jiangsu and Zhejiang industrial belts is around 7,300 CNY/ton, showing some softening.
Upstream-Downstream Transmission and Price Outlook
PSF price trends depend heavily on cost transmission from upstream PTA and MEG, as well as operating rates in downstream spinning and nonwovens. The current off-season for textile demand means weaving mills purchase only small, urgent orders, making them highly sensitive to raw material prices. If PTA continues to decline, PSF's pricing flexibility will be further squeezed.
The high price of water treatment fiber balls is relatively independent. Although also produced from polyester chips, their manufacturing involves modification and molding processes with higher added value. Moreover, the market size for water treatment fiber balls is much smaller than for textile-grade PSF, making supply-demand dynamics more susceptible to small order fluctuations. The current 15,500 CNY/ton quote has been stable for some time and is expected to remain high in the near term.
