The price of polyester staple fiber (PSF) showed a moderate decline in early July. According to publicly available industry data, the benchmark price stood at 7,346.17 yuan/ton on July 9, 2026, down 0.98% from 7,418.65 yuan/ton at the start of the month. The daily change was +1.08%, but the weekly trend remained weak. This price coincides exactly with the midpoint of the past year's range—7,346.6 yuan/ton—indicating a sensitive equilibrium point between supply and demand.
Price Range and Industry Signals
Over the past year (July 2025 to July 2026), PSF prices experienced sharp volatility, peaking at 8,426.02 yuan/ton and bottoming at 6,267.17 yuan/ton—a range of 2,158.85 yuan/ton. The current price is 1,079.85 yuan/ton below the peak and 1,079 yuan/ton above the trough. This "mid-range" status implies different operational logic for each link in the chain: upstream polyester plants face compressed margins but no urgent need for mass production cuts; downstream yarn spinners and weavers see a flexible procurement window.
Cost Pass-Through and Demand-Side Pressure
PSF prices are highly correlated with upstream PTA and MEG costs. In H1 2026, international crude oil fluctuated between $75-85/barrel, squeezing PX margins and causing spot PTA prices to gradually fall from their April peak. Weakening cost support is the main driver pulling PSF from early-year highs to the current median. Meanwhile, downstream textile demand showed a "peak season without peak" pattern—orders for home textiles and apparel slowed in Q2, with mills sticking to hand-to-mouth buying, unwilling to build inventories during a downtrend. This cautious sentiment reinforced a wait-and-see atmosphere in the PSF market, leaving prices without upward momentum in early July.
Regional Industrial Cluster Reactions
In major textile clusters such as Shengze, Keqiao, and Nantong, PSF serves as a core raw material for blended yarns and filling materials. Weaving mills in Shengze reported that although PSF prices have fallen about 12.8% from last year's peak, grey fabric prices have adjusted less, squeezing fabric margins. Traders in Keqiao have adopted a "sell-first, buy-later" strategy, reducing spot holdings and locking in prices via futures or forward contracts. Nantong's bedding cluster maintains stable demand for PSF filling, but procurement cycles have lengthened from biweekly to triweekly to mitigate price risk.
Short-Term Outlook
On the supply side, PSF plant operating rates remain at 78%-82%, with no significant curtailment. On the demand side, textile and apparel export growth slowed to below 3% year-on-year in May-June 2026, while domestic consumption lacks a catalyst. Therefore, prices are likely to oscillate in a narrow range of 7,200-7,500 yuan/ton in the near term. If crude falls below $70/barrel or autumn/winter orders disappoint in August, prices could test the 7,000 yuan/ton level. Conversely, coordinated polyester plant cuts or a downstream restocking wave could push prices above 7,600 yuan/ton.
