The cotton yarn spot market is at a delicate inflection point. According to public industry data, as of July 9, 2026, the benchmark price of cotton yarn 32S stood at 24,875 yuan per ton, the highest level in the past year. Compared to the year's low of 23,175 yuan per ton, the cumulative increase reached 7.3%. Notably, the price showed zero change from the previous day, indicating that the market is in a tug-of-war between bulls and bears at the high end.
Supply-Demand Logic Behind the High Price
Over the past 12 months, the trading range for cotton yarn 32S was between 23,175 and 24,875 yuan per ton, with a median of 24,025 yuan per ton. The current price is about 3.5% above the median. From an annual perspective, the price has climbed from a low to a high plateau, but the zero daily change suggests a lack of upward momentum. This 'high-level sideways' pattern typically marks the tipping point between upstream cost pass-through and downstream order absorption capacity.
For spinning mills, the raw material cost side faces dual pressure: on one hand, cotton spot prices are also strengthening, squeezing the processing margin; on the other hand, while cotton yarn prices are high, if downstream fabric and garment enterprises cannot accept higher quotes, the room for further price increases will quickly narrow. Internal industry calculations show that when cotton yarn 32S prices exceed 24,500 yuan per ton, the purchasing willingness of small and medium-sized weaving mills drops significantly, prompting them to adopt a hand-to-mouth buying strategy.
Transmission Effects Across Industrial Clusters
Major cotton yarn consuming regions such as Shengze, Nantong, and Keqiao are showing divergence. In Shengze, weaving mill operating rates remain around 70%, but new orders are mostly short-term and small-lot, with large orders generally postponed. Feedback from Nantong's home textile cluster is more direct: terminal home textile products are difficult to raise prices, forcing fabric suppliers to pressure upstream. Data from Keqiao Light Textile City shows that the transaction activity of cotton yarn products has dropped about 15% month-on-month, and traders' willingness to build inventories has weakened.
This transmission chain implies that if cotton yarn prices remain high while terminal demand fails to recover simultaneously, industry profits will concentrate upstream. Midstream weaving and downstream garment segments may be forced to cut production or seek alternative materials. The cost advantage of substitutes like polyester staple fiber and viscose staple fiber will be amplified during this period.
Concerns for Export Orders
For export-oriented enterprises, the combination of RMB exchange rate fluctuations and weak overseas demand is eroding export competitiveness under high cotton yarn prices. Taking cotton yarn 32S as an example, the current price translates to approximately $3,400 per ton, which is 5%-8% higher than comparable products from India and Vietnam. Southeast Asian buyers have begun to shift to lower-cost supply sources, and China's cotton yarn export volume fell about 3% quarter-on-quarter in Q2.
However, domestic cotton yarn still holds advantages in quality stability and delivery reliability. Differentiated products like high-count combed yarn and functional yarn maintain stronger pricing power. Export enterprises can partially hedge against order loss risks from high prices by shifting product structures toward higher counts and functional features.
