On July 9, 2026, the bulk commodity market for textiles flashed a cautionary signal: PTA surged 1.44% and polyester staple fiber rose 0.64%, while all three major polyester filament yarns—DTY, POY, and FDY—declined, with DTY falling 1.28%. This rare 'scissor gap' between upstream raw material price hikes and downstream product price drops indicates a sharp realignment of profit distribution along the supply chain.

Cost Push vs. Weak Demand

PTA jumped from 5,873 to 5,958 yuan per ton, up 22.78% year-on-year. The rally is underpinned by tight PX supply during summer maintenance season and planned shutdowns of some PTA units. However, polyester staple fiber only edged up 0.64%, suggesting limited willingness downstream to absorb higher raw material costs.

The behavior of polyester filament yarns more clearly reflects actual terminal demand. DTY slumped 1.28% to below 9,200 yuan per ton; POY and FDY fell 0.61% and 0.31%, respectively. Although DTY is still up 10.38% year-on-year, the persistent decline in recent sessions indicates that restocking demand has been exhausted and the market is now digesting inventories. Weaving mills are running at 60-70% capacity, with new orders mainly small and short-cycle, lacking sustained momentum.

Cotton vs. Chemical Fiber: Divergent Temperatures

Compared with the volatility in chemical fibers, the cotton chain remained calm. Cotton yarn 21S and 32S prices were flat, up 7.81% and 7.22% year-on-year. Cotton lint edged down 0.20% to 17,882 yuan per ton, still 17.73% higher than a year ago. Viscose staple fiber and rayon yarn also held steady. This 'cotton stable, chemical fiber volatile' pattern reflects the different cycle positions of the two chains.

The cotton market is in a transition window between old and new crop years, with reserve cotton auctions stabilizing supply expectations. Raw silk, by contrast, plunged 10.07% year-on-year to around 426,000 yuan per ton, reflecting persistent oversupply after years of silkworm acreage expansion—a trend unlikely to reverse soon.

Spandex and Acrylonitrile: Independent Rallies

Spandex quoted at 29,667 yuan per ton, up 21.09% year-on-year—the biggest gainer of the day. This is linked to capacity rationalization over the past two years, with small players exiting and leading producers gaining pricing power. Acrylonitrile rose 15.61% year-on-year, driven by demand from ABS resin and carbon fiber, and its link to textiles is weakening.

These two outliers show that in a weak overall demand environment, segments with favorable supply structures can still stage independent rallies. For buyers, this means a one-size-fits-all procurement strategy may fail; each product must be assessed on its own supply-demand fundamentals.

Near-Term Outlook: Divergence Likely to Persist

From an inventory cycle perspective, PTA still has room to rise on cost support and maintenance expectations, but downstream polyester filament yarns face continued inventory pressure that may compress processing margins. If weaving mill utilization falls further during the traditional August lull, larger declines in filament yarns cannot be ruled out. The cotton chain is likely to trade in a narrow range, awaiting direction from the new crop.

For Buyers - Monitor the spread between PTA and polyester filament yarns; the current window of 'upstream up, downstream down' may be an opportunity to lock in forward contracts for filament yarns. - Spandex and acrylonitrile have high year-on-year gains; shorten procurement cycles and buy on demand to avoid overstocking at high prices. - Raw silk continues to decline—a positive for silk fabric buyers; consider longer contract terms to lock in low prices.

For Exporters - Incorporate PTA volatility into cost escalation clauses in export quotations to protect margins. - Weakening polyester filament yarns may give overseas customers room to push for lower prices; adjust negotiation strategy accordingly. - Monitor RMB exchange rate movements and changes in export tax rebate policies for chemical fibers when calculating actual returns.
