China's synthetic fiber industry is undergoing a deep shift from scale expansion to technology-driven growth. At the 2025 National Science and Technology Awards, Donghua University won a first prize for its green and smart manufacturing technology for the polyester fiber chain, and an international cooperation award for foreign scientist Elsa Reichmanis. The double recognition signals a redefinition of the industry's path from 'big' to 'strong'.
Background
Polyester fiber accounts for over 70% of global synthetic fiber output, with China producing 70% of the world's total. The industry has long suffered from high energy consumption, weak flexible manufacturing, and insufficient self-sufficiency. Donghua's team spent more than a decade integrating materials, textiles, automation, and IT to create a 'one-head, three-tail' multi-point polymerization-spinning-texturing modular digital platform. The project generated 76 invention patents, 10 software copyrights, and 14 national/industry standards. Its technology has been deployed in key fiber bases in Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Xinjiang, covering over 10 leading enterprises.
Industry Impact
Data shows the project generated over 200 billion RMB in new sales, 10 billion in profits, and $1.8 billion in exports. These numbers reflect a tangible easing of the 'food-cotton land conflict'. By relying more on petrochemical or recycled polyester, the textile industry reduces pressure on arable land, while lower energy consumption and defect rates directly support China's carbon neutrality goals.
For buyers, this means domestic polyester fibers now offer more reliable quality and stability. In niche areas that previously depended on imports—such as high-performance industrial yarns and differentiated fibers—local alternatives are now available. For factories, the modular digital platform lowers the cost of production line upgrades, enabling smaller firms to modernize through technology licensing. The $1.8 billion in exports indicates that Chinese fiber products are shifting from price advantage to technology premium.
The international cooperation award also carries strategic weight. Reichmanis' long-term collaboration with Donghua has built a global platform for advanced fiber materials. For foreign trade companies, this means Chinese fibers will gain easier international recognition on standards and certifications, reducing trade barriers.
