The localization of high-end specialty fibers is moving from lab to production line. China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) recently released the shortlisted units for key fine chemical innovation tasks, with textile sector participants targeting PBO fiber, PIPD fiber, melamine fiber, and carbon fiber auxiliary materials. This signals a systematic breakthrough in upstream monomers and additives that have long relied on imports.
Background
The tasks are divided into three categories: intermediates, key materials, and critical equipment. In high-performance fiber monomers, Zhejiang Dinglong Technology, Estre (Chengdu) Biopharmaceutical, and Sichuan University successfully bid for the PBO fiber monomer DAR task. PBO fiber is ten times stronger than steel, but its monomer synthesis has been dominated by overseas firms. Dinglong also joined the PIPD fiber monomer TAP project. PIPD is a novel fiber with high strength and flame retardancy, used in aerospace and ballistic protection.
On the material side, China Blue Star Chemical took on the PIPD fiber development, while Puyang Lvyu New Material Technology entered the melamine fiber project. Melamine fiber offers inherent flame retardancy, ideal for industrial protective wear and vehicle interiors.
Carbon fiber supporting materials are another focus. Zhejiang Baowan Carbon Fiber, Lianyungang Shenying Composite Materials, and Yulin Hingsen New Materials joined the high-strength carbon fiber precursor oil agent task. Jiangsu New Vision Advanced Functional Fiber Innovation Center and Weihai Tuozhan Fiber jointly developed carbon fiber composite sizing agents, which are critical for fiber-resin interface bonding.
Additionally, the Yangtze River Delta Physics Research Center entered the high-performance fiber polymerization reactor task, targeting equipment autonomy.
Industry Impact
Three implications emerge. First, domestic monomer production will cut specialty fiber costs. For PBO fiber, global supply is limited to a few Japanese firms; domestic monomer could boost localization from below 5% to over 30%. Second, carbon fiber auxiliary breakthroughs will improve batch stability. Sizing agents have been monopolized by German and Japanese firms, limiting Chinese carbon fiber's use in aerospace. Weihai Tuozhan's collaboration could yield a domestic sizing agent within 2-3 years. Third, melamine fiber industrialization will enrich flame-retardant options, aligning with EU PFAS restrictions.
