China's high-performance specialty fiber industry is undergoing a systematic breakthrough from raw materials to equipment. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released a list of key innovation tasks for fine chemicals, involving multiple textile and chemical companies in PBO fiber, PIPD fiber, carbon fiber, and related materials, targeting long-standing import-dependent bottlenecks.
This is not a simple technology upgrade but a deep layout for supply chain self-sufficiency. Industry data shows demand for specialty fibers in aerospace, defense, and new energy grows over 15% annually, yet domestic high-end product rates remain below 30%. These tasks signal accelerated domestic substitution for upstream monomers, intermediates, and key equipment.
Raw Material Breakthrough: From Bottleneck to Control In high-performance fiber monomers, Zhejiang Dinglong Technology, along with Aisiite (Chengdu) Biopharmaceutical and Sichuan University, won the task for DAR monomer in PBO fiber. PBO, known as a 'super fiber,' has strength and modulus far beyond traditional aramid, crucial for ballistic materials and aerospace structures. The DAR monomer was previously monopolized by firms like Toyobo. Dinglong also entered the TAP monomer task for PIPD fiber, the next-generation ultra-high-performance fiber with superior heat resistance and compressive strength.
This means China's textile industry extends from downstream weaving to upstream fine chemicals. For buyers, domestic monomers will directly reduce production costs—PBO fiber currently costs around $280-$420 per kg, with raw materials accounting for over 60% of costs. Once self-sufficient, prices could drop 30%-40%, opening civilian markets.
Fiber and Auxiliaries: Parallel Progress, Faster Industrialization On the fiber side, China BlueStar Chengrand Chemical undertakes PIPD fiber, while Puyang Lvyu New Materials enters melamine fiber projects. Melamine fiber has inherent flame retardancy, in high demand for firefighting suits and industrial filters, but domestic products had weaknesses in heat resistance and spinning stability. This task will drive industrial application of high-performance flame-retardant fibers, significant for building safety and rail transit.
Carbon fiber auxiliaries stand out. Zhejiang Baowan Carbon Fiber, Lianyungang Shenying Composite Materials, and Yulin Hingsen New Materials join the task for high-strength, high-modulus carbon fiber precursor oil agents. These agents are critical for fiber surface quality and subsequent processing. Jiangsu New Vision Advanced Functional Fiber Innovation Center and Weihai Tuozhan Fiber jointly develop carbon fiber composite sizing agent, solving interface compatibility issues between carbon fiber and resin matrix. This breakthrough will improve performance consistency in wind turbine blades and pressure vessels.
For factories, domestic auxiliaries mean more stable supply chains and lower trial costs. Previously, carbon fiber sizing agents were almost entirely imported; supply disruptions could halt production. Many shortlisted firms already have mass production capabilities, with batch substitution expected within 2-3 years.
Equipment Self-Reliance: From Buying to Building Yangtze River Delta Physics Research Center enters the task for high-performance fiber polymerization reactors. These reactors are core equipment, with heat resistance, corrosion resistance, and stirring precision directly affecting fiber molecular weight distribution and performance. Previously, high-end reactors were imported from Germany or Japan, costing over $1.4 million each with delivery times up to 18 months. This task will drive equipment self-reliance, lowering industry expansion barriers.
This structural change will reshape the industry. With domestic equipment, SMEs can enter specialty fiber, breaking the current dominance by giants like Shenghong and Zhongfu Shenying. Over the next five years, domestic specialty fiber capacity is expected to double, and price competition will spur product innovation.
