PTA prices are approaching the 6000 yuan mark with daily increases exceeding 1%, driven by a combination of cost-push and supply-demand dynamics. For downstream polyester plants and weaving mills, the continuous rise in raw material costs is squeezing already thin processing margins, pushing the industry into a critical phase of price negotiation along the chain.
Price Center Shifts: From Trough to Mid-High
According to publicly available industry data, the PTA benchmark price on July 10, 2026, stood at 5957.84 yuan/ton, with a daily increase of 1.44% and a monthly cumulative rise of 2.32%. This price sits at the mid-to-high end of its one-year range, with a spread of about 975 yuan from the historical high of 6932.90 yuan/ton, while it has surged 1594 yuan from the yearly low of 4363.25 yuan/ton. The 12-month average price was 5375.32 yuan/ton, meaning the current price exceeds the average by approximately 10.8%, indicating a sustained upward trend.
Looking at the annual price curve, PTA experienced a gradual recovery from a trough in the second half of 2025. The low point of 4363 yuan occurred last year, after which prices steadily recovered, reaching around 5823 yuan in early June before accelerating in July. This trajectory is linked to stronger upstream PX cost support and supply tightness caused by maintenance at some PTA plants.
Cost Transmission: Polyester Sector Bears the Brunt
As a core raw material for polyester production, PTA price fluctuations directly impact products such as polyester filament yarn, polyester staple fiber, and bottle-grade chips. The current PTA price near 6000 yuan means that polyester plants' raw material procurement costs have risen by over 35% compared to the low point last year. Given that downstream textile demand has not grown significantly in tandem, the room for polyester product price increases is limited, leading to a noticeable compression of cash flow in the polyester sector.
Weaving mills face an even more delicate situation. Gray fabric price adjustments typically lag behind raw material changes, and downstream apparel brands and traders have limited tolerance for price hikes. Data from major weaving clusters such as Shengze and Keqiao indicate that some small and medium-sized mills have begun reducing machine utilization and prioritizing the use of previously purchased lower-cost raw material inventories. If PTA prices remain above 6000 yuan, industry-wide production cuts and price support actions cannot be ruled out.
Supply-Demand Fundamentals: Short-Term Tightness vs. Medium-Term Concerns
The current strength in PTA prices is closely tied to its own supply-demand structure. On one hand, several large PTA producers conducted concentrated maintenance in the second quarter, reducing spot market availability. On the other hand, downstream polyester operating rates remain relatively high, creating rigid demand for PTA. This phase of supply-demand mismatch is the direct driver of rapid price increases.
However, medium-term risks are also present. As maintenance units gradually restart and new capacity comes online, PTA supply is expected to increase. At the same time, external uncertainties facing textile and apparel exports, as well as the pace of domestic consumption recovery, could impact the sustainability of downstream demand. If the supply-demand balance shifts, PTA prices may face a rapid correction.
