The PTA spot market has shown a clear upward trend in early July. Industry public data shows that on July 10, the PTA benchmark price settled at 5,957.84 yuan per ton, up 2.32% from the beginning of the month (5,823 yuan). This price sits in the mid-to-high range of the annual band—over the past year, the lowest point was 4,363 yuan and the highest 6,932 yuan. The current price has rebounded about 36.5% from the trough but remains nearly 1,000 yuan below the peak.
Behind this price signal is a dual squeeze from the cost side and supply-demand fundamentals. From a cost logic perspective, PX, as the direct upstream of PTA, has a strong transmission effect on PTA pricing. Recently, international oil prices have maintained volatility under the alternating influence of macro sentiment and geopolitical factors, and the PX side has not shown significant loosening, providing relatively solid bottom support for PTA. However, it is worth noting that the current PTA processing fee has recovered from earlier levels; if PX prices decline, PTA's price resilience will face a test.
Industry Impact
The divergence in operating rates across the polyester sector is amplifying uncertainty in the supply chain. On one hand, polyester filament yarn and staple fiber enterprises are seeing inventory pressure due to limited terminal order recovery, with some plants already actively reducing loads. On the other hand, the bottle-grade chip sector maintains high operating rates due to stable export demand. This structural divergence means demand for PTA is not uniform but rather shows a pattern of 'partial strength, overall caution.' For PTA producers, the rate of inventory destocking will directly determine the sustainability of their price-supporting stance.
More critically for downstream buyers, the current PTA price has moved into the mid-to-high range for the year, with a daily increase of 1.44%, indicating short-term upward momentum remains. However, historical data shows that when PTA prices break through the 6,000 yuan/ton mark, they often trigger downstream resistance and a shift in replenishment pace. At 5,957 yuan, the price is only about 0.7% away from the psychological threshold of 6,000 yuan, meaning the next few trading days will be a critical point for long-short battles.
From a regional industrial cluster perspective, polyester plants and weaving mills in Jiangsu and Zhejiang are closely monitoring this price trend. Weaving enterprises in places like Shengze and Changxing generally face a dilemma between 'buying on rising prices' and 'cost pressure.' If PTA prices continue to rise, profit margins in the grey fabric sector will be further squeezed, and some small mills may be forced to adopt 'production cuts to protect prices' strategies.
