The announcement of the 2025 National Science and Technology Awards sends a clear signal to the global textile industry: the first prize in the category of scientific and technological progress has been awarded to a project covering the entire polyester fiber industry chain. This is not a breakthrough in a single technology, but a systemic victory spanning from PTA to polyester filament, from green catalysis to intelligent control. For China, which produces 70% of the world's chemical fibers, this means the autonomous technology system for the 'industrial staple food' is now largely complete, accelerating the shift from scale advantage to technology advantage.
Dual Drivers of Green and Intelligent Manufacturing
The award-winning project was led by Tongkun Group in collaboration with ten units including Donghua University and Zhejiang Sci-Tech University, after more than a decade of research. Its core value lies in simultaneously addressing three pain points of the polyester fiber industry. First, green manufacturing: the project pioneered a direct PTA-PET coupled low-carbon production model and replaced traditional heavy metal catalysts with environmentally friendly titanium-based catalysts, reducing pollution at the source. Second, intelligent manufacturing: the full-process DCS control system achieved domestic substitution, integrating process and quality control, making 'lights-out factories' feasible in chemical fiber production. Third, service-oriented manufacturing: through a 'multi-head, multi-tail' polymerization platform, enterprises can flexibly adjust capacity to realize customized production of differentiated products, bridging the gap between mass production and individual demand.
From Lab to Billions: Speed and Scale of Technology Implementation
The true measure of a technology is its real-world impact. The project has formed a complete intellectual property system including 76 invention patents and 14 national and industry standards, with an expert panel certifying the overall technology as internationally leading. Results have been deployed in more than ten enterprises across industrial bases in Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Xinjiang, generating over 200 billion RMB in new sales, over 10 billion RMB in profits and taxes, and 1.8 billion USD in export earnings. This means the technology is not just a concept; it has tangibly driven industrial upgrading and foreign trade competitiveness. For buyers, this translates into significantly improved product consistency and lower costs due to reduced energy consumption and defect rates.
International Collaboration Award: China's Fiber Discipline Goes Global
Alongside the first prize, Professor Elsa Reichmanis from Donghua University received the International Science and Technology Cooperation Award. A member of three U.S. national academies, she has long worked in semiconductor materials but devoted substantial effort to collaborating with China's fiber materials discipline. She chaired multiple editions of the world's largest fiber academic conference and helped train a group of national-level talents at Donghua. The significance of this award lies in its proof that Chinese textile science and technology is not only 'following' or 'running alongside' but is beginning to attract top global minds for co-construction. This open innovation posture holds long-term value for attracting overseas talent and enhancing international discourse power.
