A technology system covering the entire polyester fiber industry chain has just won the 2025 First Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award. Led by Tongkun Group in collaboration with ten institutions including Donghua University, the project, after more than a decade of research, directly addresses the core 'industrial staple' of the chemical fiber sector: polyester fiber.

Background

On July 8, the National Science and Technology Award Conference in Beijing announced the 2025 awards. The highest honor in the textile chemical fiber sector was not for a single technological breakthrough, but for a systemic solution spanning green manufacturing, intelligent manufacturing, and service-oriented manufacturing. The team, led by Professor Wang Huaping from Donghua University, achieved core technological breakthroughs in three dimensions: PTA-PET direct-coupled low-carbon manufacturing, environmentally friendly titanium-based catalysts, domestic substitution of full-process automated equipment, and a 'multi-head multi-tail' flexible polymerization platform.

What does this mean? For China, which produces 70% of the world's chemical fibers, the technological autonomy of polyester fiber is directly linked to the security of the entire textile industry chain. While the industry has won National Science and Technology Awards before—such as the 2017 award for carbon fiber and the 2014 award for digital yarn dyeing—this is the first time a systemic innovation has been recognized at the level of the entire general fiber industry chain.

Industry Impact

Looking at the data, the commercialization results of the project are very direct. To date, the related technologies have been implemented in over ten enterprises across industrial bases in Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Xinjiang, generating cumulative new sales of over 200 billion RMB, profits and taxes exceeding 10 billion RMB, and export earnings of 1.8 billion USD. The project has also established a complete intellectual property system comprising 76 authorized invention patents, 10 software copyrights, and 14 national and industry standards.

For buyers, the most direct change brought by this technology system is the enhancement of product differentiation capabilities. Traditional polyester fiber production is characterized by high volume and low variety. The project's pioneering 'one head, three tails' multi-point addition process achieves modular digital linkage from polymerization to spinning and texturing, enabling customized production coordinated across multiple regions. This means downstream brands and fabric buyers will gain access to more flexible, small-batch, multi-variety polyester fiber supply options.

For factories, the large-scale domestic substitution of DCS control systems directly reduces the construction cost of automated production lines. Simultaneously, breakthroughs in green manufacturing, including environmentally friendly titanium-based catalysts and crude oil-based textile oils, are driving the industry towards low-carbon production. Tongkun Group has leveraged the project's demonstration effect to be selected as one of the first national 'Zero-Waste Enterprise' case studies.

Practical Advice

For Buyers - Monitor the technological upgrade progress of polyester fiber suppliers: Prioritize companies that have adopted the 'multi-head multi-tail' flexible polymerization platform, as they can offer more flexible customization services for differentiated products. - Include green certification requirements in contracts: The full lifecycle green standard for polyester fiber established by the project can serve as a key basis for buyers to evaluate supplier environmental compliance. - Leverage the technology dividend to optimize inventory management: The agile manufacturing capability brought by modular production helps shorten lead times, allowing buyers to adjust safety stock levels accordingly.

For Foreign Trade Companies - Use the 'autonomous intellectual property system' as a bargaining chip: The 14 national and industry standards covered by the project can serve as authoritative proof of technical compliance when presenting to European and American clients. - Monitor carbon tariff trends in export markets: The low-carbon manufacturing model achieved by the project helps reduce the carbon footprint of polyester fiber products, providing a buffer against mechanisms like the EU's CBAM. - Utilize the demonstration enterprise status to enhance brand image: Tongkun Group's 'Zero-Waste Enterprise' label can serve as direct evidence of corporate ESG performance in overseas marketing.

Concurrently, the awards also featured a noteworthy International Science and Technology Cooperation Award: Professor Elsa Reichmanis from Lehigh University was recognized for her long-term efforts in promoting Sino-US cooperation in fiber materials science. Her collaboration with Donghua University's State Key Laboratory for Advanced Fiber Materials has produced 18 high-level papers and one monograph, and she has served as chair of multiple international conferences on advanced fibers and polymer materials. This indicates that alongside building an autonomous technology system, China's textile industry remains actively integrated into the global innovation network.

The dual awards send a clear signal: the polyester fiber category, the 'staple' of the textile industry, has transitioned from a competitive advantage based on scale to one based on technology. For all enterprises across the industry chain, the next competitive focus will shift from capacity expansion to the ability to apply technology.
