A seemingly mundane price quotation is revealing a long-overlooked pricing truth in the polyester staple fiber (PSF) chain.

On July 12, 2026, Henan Kaijie Water Treatment Co., Ltd. published a uniform price of 15,500 RMB/ton for ordinary fiber balls across three specifications—30mm, 40mm, and 50mm in diameter. This rare occurrence of identical pricing for all sizes has almost never appeared in previous quotation dynamics.

The industrial logic behind the quotation

Fiber balls are filtration materials made from PSF through processes such as opening, carding, needling, and ball-forming, primarily used in industrial wastewater treatment and circulating water systems. Their raw material cost is directly linked to PSF prices, which in turn fluctuate with PTA (purified terephthalic acid) and MEG (monoethylene glycol) costs.

The current quotation of 15,500 RMB/ton, when viewed against the PSF price cycle, suggests that processing margins have been compressed close to the breakeven line. Taking conventional 1.4D×38mm PSF as a benchmark, its average price in the first half of 2026 was around 7,500-7,800 RMB/ton. The processing cost from PSF to fiber balls (including auxiliaries, electricity, labor, and waste) typically ranges from 3,000 to 4,000 RMB/ton. Adding packaging, transportation, and distribution costs, a factory-gate price of 13,000-14,000 RMB/ton would be considered normal.

The 15,500 RMB/ton quotation is actually 1,500-2,500 RMB/ton above this theoretical cost line. This premium reflects both the rigid quality requirements of the water treatment industry and the current supply-demand balance supporting prices.

Three industry signals

First signal: the time lag in raw material cost pass-through is shortening. In the past, PSF price fluctuations took 2-4 weeks to transmit to the fiber ball segment. But since Q2 2026, frequent adjustments in upstream PTA prices have prompted downstream water treatment companies to adopt shorter pricing cycles, shifting from monthly to weekly or even daily updates. The current price plateau at Henan Kaijie precisely indicates that the market expects no drastic swings in raw material costs in the near term.

Second signal: rigid demand in the water treatment sector provides a price cushion. Fiber balls are consumable filtration materials irreplaceable in circulating water systems of power, chemical, and metallurgical industries. These end-users are less sensitive to price fluctuations than the textile and apparel sector, prioritizing product consistency and supply stability. Consequently, fiber ball prices tend to show greater resilience even when upstream costs fluctuate modestly.

Third signal: pricing power for intermediate goods is shifting from producers to channel players. Traditionally, fiber ball prices were set by manufacturers based on cost-plus. However, in recent years, water treatment engineering companies (such as Henan Kaijie, which operates both production and trading) have gained stronger bargaining power in the supply chain. Pricing strategies now increasingly reflect terminal project bidding prices and inventory turnover pressure. The uniform quotation of 15,500 RMB/ton may well be an active market test by the channel side.

Practical impact on the chain

For PSF producers, the narrowing profit margin in the fiber ball segment reduces the appeal of forward integration into deep processing. In the past two years, several PSF companies planned to build fiber ball production lines to capture processing profits. But current price signals suggest that the profitability outlook for this path has dimmed.

For water treatment engineering companies, a stable quotation helps lock in costs when bidding for long-term projects. However, caution is warranted: if upstream PSF prices rise more than 10% (to above 8,500 RMB/ton), the theoretical cost of fiber balls would exceed 16,000 RMB/ton, making the current 15,500 RMB/ton quotation unsustainable.

For end-users (power plants, chemical plants, etc.), it is advisable to review whether procurement contracts include price adjustment clauses. The current price plateau offers a window to renegotiate annual framework agreements and lock in prices.

Practical recommendations

For buyers - Prioritize signing 3-6 month long-term supply agreements to lock in the current 15,500 RMB/ton price level during the raw material price plateau. - Cross-compare prices for 30mm and 40mm specifications against 50mm ones, as the uniform quotation may mask actual cost differences between sizes. - Monitor PSF futures contract trends; if PTA prices break above 6,200 RMB/ton, initiate price renegotiation procedures immediately.

For fiber ball producers - Optimize processing techniques, focusing on reducing energy consumption in the opening and ball-forming stages, as current margins cannot absorb additional waste. - Develop differentiated products (e.g., modified fiber balls, antibacterial fiber balls) to escape homogeneous price competition through product upgrading. - Establish flexible raw material inventory management; when PSF prices are low, increase stockpiles appropriately to smooth cost fluctuations.
