In mid-July, the polyester staple fiber spot market in Jiangsu experienced a notable price surge. Industry data shows that on July 13, local spot prices rose 100 yuan/ton from the previous day, stabilizing around 7,400 yuan/ton. This increase stands out in the recent relatively stable chemical fiber market, as a single-day gain of 100 yuan exceeds normal fluctuation ranges.
Cost-Driven Pricing Logic
The direct driver of this price hike is not a concentrated release of downstream orders but the rigid transmission of upstream raw material costs. According to market tracking data, the negotiation range for Jiangsu staple fiber spot on that day was concentrated between 7,350 and 7,450 yuan/ton. Low-end quotes remained around 7,200 yuan/ton, while high-end quotes touched 7,500 yuan/ton. The 300-yuan spread between low and high ends reflects differentiated pricing strategies adopted by companies due to varying raw material procurement costs.
For the textile industry chain, polyester staple fiber, as an intermediate raw material, often has a magnifying effect on price fluctuations. The price trends of upstream PTA and MEG directly determine the cost floor for staple fiber. Recent international oil price volatility has driven changes in PX prices, which then transmit to the PTA segment and ultimately form price feedback at the staple fiber spot end. This means that as long as upstream raw material prices do not experience a significant decline, staple fiber prices will maintain a high-level volatile pattern.
Industry Belt Response and Procurement Rhythm
As an important production area for domestic polyester staple fiber, Jiangsu's price changes have a bellwether effect on downstream industries such as weaving, nonwovens, and filling materials. Feedback from the industrial belt indicates that this price increase did not trigger panic buying. Downstream companies generally adopt a "procure on demand, control inventory" strategy, closely linked to lessons learned from high-level lock-in during 2023-2024.
Notably, the current staple fiber price is in the middle-to-high range historically. The low-end quote of 7,200 yuan/ton provides bargaining space for larger buyers, while the high-end quote of 7,500 yuan/ton reflects premiums for small urgent orders or high-quality products. This price stratification suggests the market is not entirely seller-dominated, and buyers retain some options.
Short-Term Outlook
From a supply-demand perspective, current polyester staple fiber industry operating rates remain at medium levels, with social inventories within controllable ranges. However, demand has not shown significant improvement signals—downstream textile and apparel export growth is slowing, and domestic consumption recovery is limited. This means cost-driven price increases lack sustained demand support.
If upstream raw material prices correct, staple fiber spot prices will likely follow downward. However, given that current PTA processing margins are already compressed to low levels, the room for further cost-side decline is limited. Therefore, in the short term, staple fiber prices will likely oscillate within the 7,300-7,500 yuan/ton range; breaking through the upper bound requires stronger cost push or demand coordination.
