The PTA price has stabilized around the 5,910 yuan/ton mark, a signal that the cost support logic for the entire polyester chain is being reconfirmed by the market. According to publicly available industry data on July 13, 2026, the PTA benchmark price stood at 5,910.50 yuan/ton, up 1.50% from 5,823 yuan/ton at the beginning of the month, and significantly higher than the mid-to-low levels seen a year ago.
Price Position and Annual Range
From an annual perspective, the current price is in the mid-to-high range. Over the past year, PTA hit a low of 4,363.25 yuan/ton and a high of 6,932.90 yuan/ton, with a median of 5,648.08 yuan/ton. The current price of 5,910.50 yuan/ton is about 4.6% above the median but still more than 1,000 yuan/ton below the peak. This suggests PTA is neither overheated nor at risk of a sharp decline, but rather in a balanced but slightly strong position.
For polyester producers, this price level directly raises feedstock procurement costs. For example, in polyester filament yarn, every 100 yuan/ton increase in PTA theoretically raises POY costs by about 86 yuan/ton. The recent increase of 87.5 yuan/ton in PTA corresponds to a cost increase of about 75 yuan/ton for POY. Whether this cost can be successfully passed downstream to weaving mills depends on the strength of end-user orders.
Upstream-Downstream Pass-Through and Profit Distribution
PTA's strength is not isolated. Looking at profit distribution along the chain, the PX end remains high due to firm naphtha prices, while PTA processing margins are compressed to 300-400 yuan/ton, near breakeven. This explains why PTA producers are keen to support prices—a decline would further squeeze margins and potentially force high-cost plants to cut output.
The downstream polyester sector faces a more complex situation. The spread between polyester staple fiber and filament yarn has narrowed recently, indicating that end-user demand has not fully kept pace with feedstock cost increases. Weaving clusters in Shengze and Changxing are operating at around 70% capacity, but new orders are mostly small-to-medium in size, lacking large-volume support. Dyeing mills in Shaoxing and Shishi have not yet raised processing fees significantly, reflecting limited downstream tolerance for cost increases.
Inventory Cycle and Procurement Pace
Current PTA social inventory is at a moderately low level, with main port inventory in East China around 2.4 million tons, down about 15% year-on-year. Low inventories provide some price support, but caution is warranted as new capacity is expected to come online in Q3, potentially increasing supply pressure. For weaving mills and traders, the risk-reward ratio of chasing prices at current levels is not ideal.
More noteworthy is the feedstock procurement strategy of polyester plants. According to industry data, PTA inventory days at polyester plants in Jiangsu and Zhejiang remain at 7-10 days, a normal but low level. If PTA prices continue to hover around 5,910 yuan/ton, plants may opt for just-in-time purchasing rather than bulk restocking, limiting upside potential. Conversely, any unexpected volatility in crude oil could push PTA above 6,000 yuan/ton.
