The viscose staple fiber (VSF) market is undergoing a rare phase of 'high-level equilibrium.' As of July 13, 2026, the benchmark price of 1.2D VSF stood at 14,200 yuan per ton, unchanged from the start of the month but at a one-year high. This price is 1,400 yuan above the year's lowest point, representing an increase of over 10%.

For the textile industry, this signals a clear cost pressure on downstream weaving mills. The current plateau is not driven by demand but by a combination of cost-push and supply contraction.

Dual Support from Costs and Supply

On the raw material side, dissolving pulp prices have been on a steady rise since the second half of 2025, with imported hardwood dissolving pulp quotes exceeding $1,000 per ton, directly raising VSF production costs. Meanwhile, the domestic VSF industry underwent a round of capacity consolidation in 2025, with some outdated production lines shut down. The industry operating rate remained between 75% and 80%, without significant inventory buildup.

Supply-side data confirms this: VSF production in the first half of 2026 saw limited year-on-year growth, while exports remained stable. This tight supply situation provides strong price support.

Downstream Demand: A Mix of Caution and Necessity

Whether prices can rise further depends on downstream demand. The rayon yarn market is currently subdued, with yarn mills reporting insufficient orders and operating rates around 60%. High raw material costs have squeezed yarn mill margins, leading to cautious procurement strategies focused on hand-to-mouth buying.

This creates a delicate standoff: upstream factories refuse to cut prices due to cost support, while downstream users avoid chasing high prices due to weak demand. The result is days of price consolidation.

A key signal is that the 2026 average VSF price is around 13,239 yuan per ton, significantly below the current level. This suggests technical pressure for a mean reversion if demand does not improve.

Evolving Competitive Dynamics

The high VSF price is reshaping the competitive landscape. Large producers with scale advantages and raw material self-sufficiency maintain profitability, while smaller factories face greater cost pressure, prompting some to shift production toward differentiated products like lyocell fiber.

The rayon yarn market is also polarizing. High-end compact yarns, with their quality premium, can partially absorb cost increases, while low-end open-end yarns face severe losses, forcing some producers to cut output or switch to cotton yarn.

This price cycle is accelerating the survival-of-the-fittest process in the textile supply chain.

Outlook: High Volatility with Downside Risk

In the near term, VSF prices are likely to remain high and volatile. Cost support and supply tightness provide a floor, but weak demand and new capacity expectations cap the upside.

Medium-term risks should not be ignored. From the second half of 2026 to 2027, about 500,000 tons of new domestic VSF capacity is planned. Once released, it could break the current balance and trigger significant price corrections. Additionally, any easing in dissolving pulp prices would weaken cost support.

For Buyers - Maintain a cautious procurement pace with 1-2 weeks of safety stock; avoid bulk hoarding at current high prices. - Monitor dissolving pulp price trends; if a sharp decline occurs, consider delaying purchases. - Strengthen long-term contract negotiations with upstream mills to secure price protection clauses or favorable pricing terms.

For Exporters - Overseas VSF demand is relatively stable, but RMB exchange rate fluctuations could affect export competitiveness; consider forward forex hedging. - Watch capacity changes in Southeast Asian textile markets; growing rayon yarn demand in Vietnam and Bangladesh may create new export opportunities. - Base export quotations on current high prices and include price adjustment clauses to hedge against sudden raw material price drops.
