Viscose staple fiber (VSF) prices are approaching a critical juncture. As of July 13, 2026, the benchmark price for 1.2D VSF stood at 14,200 yuan per ton, unchanged from the start of the month but at the top of its one-year price range. This level represents a 1,400 yuan increase from the year's low of 12,800 yuan, a rise of approximately 10.9%, and is nearly 1,000 yuan above the annual average of 13,239.40 yuan. More notably, the price has entered the 'one-year overbought' warning zone, meaning any further increase could trigger abnormal signals in the three-year cycle.

Dual Support from Costs and Supply-Demand

The current strength in VSF prices is not driven by a single factor. On the cost side, key raw materials such as dissolving pulp remain expensive, compounded by rising energy costs, which have not significantly expanded producers' profit margins. Industry data shows that average processing costs for VSF manufacturers have risen by about 5%-8% year-on-year, while product price increases have largely covered these additional costs, resulting in limited profit improvement.

Supply has been relatively tight. Major Chinese VSF producers conducted concentrated maintenance shutdowns in the second quarter, reducing monthly output by approximately 3%-5%. Meanwhile, downstream demand from rayon yarn and blended fabric sectors has remained stable, particularly in home textiles and knitted outerwear fabrics, where order volumes have not declined significantly. This supply-demand gap makes prices prone to upward movements.

Downstream Mills' Response and Negotiation

What does the 14,200 yuan/ton price mean for downstream mills? For rayon yarn spinners that rely heavily on VSF as a raw material—typically accounting for over 70% of costs—this price level represents an increase of nearly 7% over the annual average, translating into an additional cost of about 700 yuan per ton of yarn. If this cannot be passed on through finished product price hikes, gross margins will come under direct pressure.

Procurement behavior is already diverging. Large-scale spinners, with their financial advantages, built up two to three months of safety inventory when prices were lower and are now drawing down stocks, slowing their purchasing pace. Small and medium-sized mills face a dilemma: chasing higher prices to buy could further squeeze margins, while waiting risks supply disruptions. This standoff is reflected in the spot market as shrinking volumes but firm prices.

Reactions in Regional Industrial Clusters

In key textile clusters such as Keqiao, Shengze, and Nantong, the pass-through effect of VSF prices has begun to emerge. Traders in Keqiao report increased downstream inquiries but subdued actual transactions, with a widening gap between buyers' and sellers' price expectations. Some weaving mills in Shengze are adjusting their product mix, reducing the proportion of pure viscose products and shifting toward blends with polyester and cotton to mitigate raw material volatility.

In the Nantong home textile base, where reliance on VSF is relatively lower and product value-added is higher, the short-term price impact is not yet significant. However, if VSF prices remain elevated, the effect is expected to pass through to finished goods prices by the end of the third quarter.

Outlook

Historically, VSF prices often enter a seasonal adjustment phase in July-August. This year's high-level consolidation reflects growing market divergence. On one hand, potential summer power rationing policies could affect plant operating rates, creating supply-side contraction expectations. On the other hand, terminal apparel consumption has yet to show clear signs of recovery, leaving demand-side support uncertain.

Overall, VSF prices are likely to oscillate within the 14,000-14,500 yuan/ton range. Breaking above the previous high would require stronger supply-demand drivers, while a correction below 13,500 yuan/ton would need a significant weakening of downstream demand. For industry participants, the current focus should be on inventory turnover efficiency rather than betting on price direction.

Practical Recommendations

For Purchasers - Adopt a phased procurement strategy to avoid concentrated replenishment at high prices, using the annual average (around 13,240 yuan/ton) as a safety margin reference. - Strengthen long-term contract price locking with upstream VSF producers, aiming to secure quarterly or semi-annual supply agreements during price correction windows. - Monitor raw material trends for dissolving pulp and cotton linters pulp to anticipate VSF cost changes.

For Export Enterprises - Include raw material price adjustment clauses in export contracts to partially transfer VSF price volatility risk to overseas buyers. - Optimize product mix by increasing the export share of high-value-added differentiated viscose products (e.g., modal, lyocell) to reduce dependence on standard 1.2D grades. - Use financial instruments such as forward forex hedging to lock in exchange rate risks, avoiding dual profit erosion from currency fluctuations and raw material price hikes.
