A polyester fiber project, developed over a decade by ten entities, won the First Prize at the 2025 National Science and Technology Awards. The project, titled 'Key Technologies for Green and Smart Manufacturing of the Polyester Fiber Industrial Chain,' is backed by 76 invention patents, 14 national and industry standards, and cumulative new sales exceeding 200 billion yuan. For the textile industry, this is more than an award. It signals that China's chemical fiber sector has built a complete, self-owned technology moat for polyester fiber, the 'industrial staple' that accounts for 70% of global output. The project's core breakthroughs fall into three areas. First, green manufacturing: a direct PTA-PET coupling model and eco-friendly titanium-based catalysts reduce carbon emissions from the source. Second, smart manufacturing: full-process automation and domestic DCS control systems replace imports, ensuring stable quality and controllable delivery. Third, service-oriented manufacturing: a modular system allows flexible switching between different differentiated polyester fibers on the same line, meeting demand for multi-variety, small-batch, fast-response production. The economic impact is clear. Public data shows the project has been implemented in industrial bases in Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Xinjiang, generating over 200 billion yuan in new sales, 10 billion yuan in profits and taxes, and $1.8 billion in exports. It also significantly reduced energy consumption and defect rates. For foreign trade companies, this means Chinese polyester products now have a stronger 'green passport' for markets like Europe and the US, where carbon footprint scrutiny is tightening. Separately, the International Science and Technology Cooperation Award went to Professor Elsa Reichmanis of Lehigh University, who collaborated with Donghua University for years. This shows China's fiber materials development is embedded in global innovation networks. For buyers, focus on green certifications and suppliers with smart flexible production. For foreign trade firms, use the 'China Solution' as a differentiator and monitor capacity layouts in Xinjiang and Zhejiang.
