A technological breakthrough covering the entire polyester fiber industry chain is shifting the competitive dimension of China's textile industry from 'scale leadership' to 'technology definition.'
The Polyester Fiber Industry Chain Green and Intelligent Manufacturing Key Technology project won the first prize of the 2025 National Science and Technology Progress Award on July 8. This marks the textile and chemical fiber sector's return to the top national honor after carbon fiber technology in 2017 and intelligent dyeing equipment in 2014. However, unlike previous single-technology breakthroughs, this award's keyword is 'full industry chain'—from direct PTA polymerization to differentiated spinning and regional collaborative manufacturing, forming a replicable technology closed loop.
Technology Core: Three Dimensions Reshaping Industry Logic
Led by Donghua University researcher Wang Huaping as the first completer and Tongkun Group as the first completing unit, the project involved ten entities including Zhejiang Sci-Tech University, spanning over a decade of research. Core breakthroughs cover three dimensions:
- **Green Manufacturing**: Pioneered a direct PTA-PET coupling low-carbon model, replacing traditional batch production, paired with environmentally friendly titanium catalysts and crude oil-based fiber oils, achieving full lifecycle green standards. This means carbon reduction from the source of polyester fiber production becomes possible, directly impacting the carbon footprint management of downstream dyeing and apparel enterprises.
- **Intelligent Manufacturing**: Achieved large-scale domestic substitution of DCS control systems, establishing an integrated process and quality control system. For buyers, this implies significantly improved product batch consistency, reducing trust costs associated with traditional incoming inspection.
- **Service-Oriented Manufacturing**: Introduced a 'multi-head multi-tail' series-parallel composite polymerization platform, enabling customized differentiated products and multi-regional agile manufacturing. This directly addresses the rigid demand for small batches, multiple varieties, and short lead times in the fast fashion and functional fabric markets.
Industrial Implementation: Chain Reaction Behind 200 Billion RMB in Sales
Technology's value ultimately manifests in actual industrial transformation. According to publicly available industry data, the project has formed a complete independent intellectual property system including 76 authorized invention patents, 10 software copyrights, and 14 national and industry standards. An expert panel assessed the overall technology as reaching international leading level.
More persuasive are the economic indicators: related achievements have been promoted in industrial bases in Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Xinjiang, and over ten enterprises, cumulatively generating over 200 billion RMB in new sales, over 10 billion RMB in profits and taxes, and 1.8 billion USD in export earnings. These figures reflect the efficiency improvement of the entire chain from raw materials to finished products for polyester fiber, the 'industrial staple food.' For chemical fiber enterprises, reduced energy consumption and defect rates directly translate into profit margins; for downstream weaving and garment factories, they mean more stable supply and lower rework rates.
As the lead unit, Tongkun Group leveraged the project's demonstration effect to be selected as a national first-batch 'Zero-Waste Enterprise' model case, receiving titles such as 'National Service-Oriented Manufacturing Demonstration Enterprise' and 'National Excellent-Level Intelligent Manufacturing Demonstration Factory.' This signals that policy resources are increasingly favoring enterprises with full-chain technology integration capabilities.
International Collaboration: Two-Way Flow of Technology Discourse
The International Science and Technology Cooperation Award announced the same day was granted to Professor Elsa Reichmanis, a distinguished chair professor at Lehigh University, USA. She has long promoted US-China scientific exchanges, deeply collaborating with Donghua University's State Key Laboratory for Modification of Chemical Fibers and Polymer Materials since 2013, co-cultivating talents, publishing 18 high-level papers, and serving as academic committee chair for multiple Advanced Fiber and Polymer Materials International Conferences.
The deeper implication of this award is that China's global influence in textile technology has moved beyond 'technology introduction' into a phase of 'two-way output' and 'joint standard setting.' Foreign top scholars deeply participating in China's fiber discipline construction, in turn, enhance the global recognition of China's academic conferences and standards. For textile enterprises engaged in foreign trade, this means that in the future international market, the discourse power of Chinese technical standards will gradually strengthen, potentially redefining the technical thresholds of trade barriers.
